Description
Kano Yamanouchi is a central figure in the story of Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night. She is a seventeen-year-old girl with a striking appearance, characterized by her fair complexion, slim frame, and vibrant blonde hair. Her darkish blue eyes and delicately featured face, particularly her nose which is sometimes compared to that of Cleopatra, contribute to a captivating presence that draws attention. This current look is a deliberate change from her past; when she was a member of a popular idol group, she had long black hair and performed under the stage name Nonoka Tachibana.

At her core, Kano is defined by a powerful and straightforward personality. She is bold, confident, and remarkably determined, possessing a single-minded focus on pursuing what she genuinely wants to do. She holds strong opinions and is not easily swayed by the views of others, preferring to follow her own instincts. This determination, however, is often paired with impulsiveness and a tendency to act before thinking things through. Her enthusiasm can lead her to set unrealistic goals or propose overly ambitious plans, such as attempting to learn music composition in a single night. This combination of courage and naivety makes her a spirited individual who can sometimes be seen as thoughtless, yet her honesty and unwavering drive are distinctly charming and infectious.

Kano’s backstory is marked by a significant fall from grace. Raised by her mother, Yukine Hayakawa, who is a shrewd manager in the entertainment industry, Kano became the center and leader of the idol group Sunflower Dolls under the name Nonoka Tachibana. Her time as an idol was not happy; she experienced jealousy from other members and felt profoundly isolated. This internal turmoil culminated in a scandal when she was involved in a conflict with a fellow member, which led to rumors that she had punched the other girl. Following this incident, she was forced to retire from the group, a painful event that left her adrift and searching for a new purpose.

Her motivations are deeply rooted in this past. She refuses to give up on her passion for singing and seeks a path where she can express herself authentically, free from the constraints and painful memories of the idol industry. Her life changes direction when she encounters a mural of a jellyfish painted by a young artist named Mahiru Kozuki. The artwork resonates with her so deeply that it becomes a source of inspiration. She adopts the persona of JELEE, a mysterious masked singer who posts songs online, a name playfully derived from a misspelling of the word jellyfish. Her primary motivation shifts from simple self-expression to a collaborative dream: to prove her doubters wrong and achieve success on her own terms by combining her singing with Mahiru’s art.

Within the story, Kano serves as the catalyst who brings the anonymous artist group JELEE together. As JELEE, she is the main vocalist and lyricist, and she naturally assumes the role of the group’s leader, pushing her teammates toward their shared ambitions. Her most significant relationship is with Mahiru Kozuki, the illustrator who goes by the name Yoru Umitsuki. Kano is Mahiru's biggest admirer, and her persistent faith in Mahiru's talent directly challenges Mahiru’s deep-seated self-doubt, encouraging her to create again. Their partnership is symbiotic, as Kano finds the visual identity for her music in Mahiru's art, while Mahiru finds a purpose for her work in Kano's dreams.

Other key relationships include her complex dynamic with her mother, Yukine, who manages Sunflower Dolls and represents the manipulative side of the industry Kano fled. She also lives with her supportive older sister, Mion Hayakawa. Additionally, she navigates a complicated connection with Mei Takanashi, a former fan of her idol persona who has mixed feelings about Kano’s new direction as JELEE.

Kano undergoes a notable development throughout the series. Initially, she is a girl in recovery from a public scandal, seeking a new identity. As she assumes leadership of JELEE, her impulsiveness is gradually tempered by the responsibilities she feels toward her friends. A major turning point involves a confrontation with her past when Mahiru is offered work by Kano's mother, testing their partnership and forcing Kano to confront her unresolved trauma and feelings of worthlessness. Through these challenges, her arc moves from simply wanting to prove herself to understanding the value of mutual support and authentic creative collaboration.

As for notable abilities, Kano’s primary talent is her singing voice, which is powerful and emotive enough to have made her a successful idol and now an enigmatic online sensation. She is responsible for writing the lyrics for JELEE's songs, pouring her personal experiences and emotions into them. While her musical strengths lie in vocals and lyrics, she is notably not a composer, a fact she openly works to improve upon, reflecting her earnest yet sometimes naive approach to her craft.
