Description
Gene Yunghart holds the position of vice minister within a government organization known as the Truth Ministry. He is a central figure in the societal conflict surrounding beings called Neans, who are artificial humans. Gene is the presumed son of Roy Junghart, the scientist who created the Neans, and was raised alongside Rouge Redstar, whom he treats as a sister under their father‘s guidance.
In terms of appearance, Gene is known for his heterochromia, possessing one eye of a distinct coppery or brownish color that makes him stand out and later serves as a visual clue to his unusual heritage. His demeanor is consistently calm and composed, rarely showing signs of panic or distress even under pressure. He is highly intelligent and possesses a sharp, strategic mind, excelling in the use of manipulation and intricate plotting to achieve his aims. When necessary, he can be utterly ruthless and uncompromising, a trait that has earned him many enemies both within his organization and outside of it.
Gene‘s primary motivation and role in the story are defined by his mission to deal with nine immensely powerful prototype Neans known as the Immortal Nine. He is the one who directly orders Rouge and her partner Naomi Orthmann to hunt down and eliminate these targets. However, his actions are not merely those of a cold bureaucrat; his character is driven by a complex project to terraform Venus, a plan that involves the use of specific types of Neans. He is deeply involved in the political machinations surrounding Nean emancipation and control, often working from within the system to try and enact change, even if it means becoming a cog in a repressive apparatus.
His key relationships are central to his character development. The bond with his adoptive sister, Rouge, is particularly significant, as they were raised together like family. He also shares a close working relationship with Naomi, who operates as his subordinate on the mission. The most profound revelation about his character concerns his background. It is eventually disclosed that Gene is not the biological son of Roy Junghart. Instead, his true parents are Dr. Eva Kristella and a prototype Nean named Eden Varrock. This makes him a hybrid being, and he was taken in by Roy primarily as a scientific observation subject, someone expected to become a new kind of entity bridging humans and Neans.
Throughout the narrative, Gene undergoes significant development as he confronts this truth about his origins. While he was raised as a human and has always insisted on his own ordinariness, his mixed heritage forces him to reconsider his identity. In a pivotal moment, his biological father, Eden, acknowledges him with pride, a gesture Gene initially rejects, responding with cold formality and refusing to accept the label. Despite this outward resistance, there remains an internal conflict where he cannot fully deny this paternal connection. He is also not a static character; towards the climax of the story, he demonstrates foresight by predicting a trap that would enslave all Neans and proactively creates a counter-program to grant them true freedom, showing that his ultimate allegiance is to liberation rather than control.
As for notable abilities, Gene's primary strengths are not combat-oriented but rather cerebral and technical. He possesses an exceptional capacity for calm analysis and execution, allowing him to see through complex conspiracies and devise effective counter-plans. Most notably, he demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency, as he is capable of writing complex computer programs, including one specifically designed to completely free Neans from the restrictive control of the Asimov Code.
