Description
Martha Widdison is a member of the Puritan merchant family from Cheapside that moves into Widford Manor in the 1652 setting of the anime. She is one of the few human characters who can see the hobgoblin Hobberdy Dick, describing him as a little ragged man that does things about the house. This ability to perceive the supernatural sets her apart from most of her family, who remain unaware of the manor’s resident spirit. Martha’s background places her in the midst of the social and religious upheaval following the English Civil War, as her family attempts to establish themselves as landed gentry. Her personality is observant and open-minded; rather than fearing or dismissing the mysterious occurrences, she acknowledges them matter-of-factly. Her motivations center on navigating life in a new environment and reconciling the strange events she witnesses with her family’s strict Puritan worldview. In the story, Martha serves as a human connection to the magical world, often interacting with Hobberdy Dick and acting as a witness to his activities. Her key relationships include her immediate family—her father, mother, brother Joel, and sister Charity—as well as her growing awareness of the hobgoblin. Over the course of the series, Martha develops from a newcomer uncertain of her surroundings into someone who accepts and even works alongside the ancient guardian of the house. Her notable ability is her clairvoyant gift of seeing fairies and other hidden beings, a trait that places her at the center of the supernatural conflicts and resolutions within Widford Manor.
