Satomi Koorogi
Description
Satomi Koorogi is a celebrated Japanese voice actress, born on November 14, 1962, in Tokyo. She has been active in the industry since 1988 and is affiliated with the talent agency Production Baobab. Koorogi is widely recognized for her distinctively high-pitched and childlike voice, which has made her the go-to talent for voicing young children, animals, and mythical creatures.
Before becoming a voice actress, Koorogi graduated from junior college and worked as a kindergarten teacher. Inspired by a film, she decided to pursue a career in voice acting, training under Yamada Taihei, who introduced her to Production Baobab. Her debut role was a lamb in the long-running children's series Anpanman in 1988. She gained early attention for her role as Otama in Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (Samurai Pizza Cats) and became known as an "animal voice actress" after voicing the seal Goma-chan in Shonen Ashibe. A unique aspect of her career is her frequent casting as pre-verbal infants, including Himawari Nohara in Crayon Shin-chan and Karlmann Dukartuse in Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, a role for which she humorously noted she rarely gets to speak human language. In 2002, she faced a significant career challenge when vocal cord fatigue left her unable to speak for nearly a year, a period so difficult she considered retiring.
Koorogi's career is defined by a vast number of iconic roles. Her most famous and enduring part is Himawari Nohara, the baby sister in the Crayon Shin-chan franchise, a role she has played since 1996 across numerous television episodes and films such as Crayon Shin-chan: Fierceness That Invites a Storm! The Adult Empire Strikes Back and the more recent Crayon Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diary. In the Pokémon universe, she is the original voice of Misty's Togepi, as well as Pichu and Mew in various anime, films like Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, and video games like the Super Smash Bros. series. She also voiced the titular kitten in the beloved series Chi's Sweet Home. Other major anime roles include Ushio Okazaki in Clannad After Story, Frosch in Fairy Tail, Chiffon in Fresh Pretty Cure, Popuko in Pop Team Epic, Menchi in Excel Saga, and Nina Tucker in Fullmetal Alchemist. Her work also extends to video games, where she is known as the voice of May in the Guilty Gear series and Mint Adnade in the Super Famicom version of Tales of Phantasia.
Throughout her prolific career, Koorogi has demonstrated a remarkable ability to portray characters beyond her signature infant and animal roles. In Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, she showcased her range by voicing three distinct characters: a baby, a young girl, and an adult woman. Her contributions to animation have been formally recognized; in 2015, she received the Kids/Family Award at the ninth Seiyu Awards for her significant contributions to works beloved by children and families. With hundreds of roles to her name, Satomi Koorogi remains one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in Japanese animation.
