Description
"Before Green Gables" is a 2009 anime series that serves as a prequel to Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel "Anne of Green Gables." The story chronicles the early life of Anne Shirley, focusing on her hardships and formative experiences before her arrival at Green Gables. The narrative begins with Anne's birth to Walter and Bertha Shirley, who tragically die of illness when she is just three months old. Left an orphan, Anne is taken in by the Thomas family, who initially care for her out of obligation rather than affection.

Anne's time with the Thomases is marked by neglect and emotional hardship. Despite this, she develops a vivid imagination and a love for storytelling, which becomes her refuge. After the death of Mr. Thomas, Anne is sent to live with the Hammonds, a large family where she is treated as a servant rather than a member of the household. Her resilience and optimism shine through as she endures grueling chores and a lack of emotional support. However, her time with the Hammonds is cut short when Mr. Hammond dies, and Anne is sent to an orphanage.

At the orphanage, Anne faces further challenges, including bullying and isolation. Yet, she remains determined to find a place where she belongs. Her life takes a turn when she is mistakenly sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert at Green Gables, setting the stage for the events of the original novel. Throughout the series, Anne's character is shaped by her ability to find joy and beauty in the world despite her difficult circumstances. Her relationships with various characters, including her brief but impactful friendship with a girl named Eliza, highlight her capacity for empathy and her longing for connection.

The series explores themes of resilience, the power of imagination, and the search for belonging. Anne's journey is one of survival and self-discovery, as she navigates a world that often seems indifferent to her struggles. Her unwavering spirit and unique perspective on life make her a compelling protagonist, and her early experiences provide a deeper understanding of the character who would later capture the hearts of readers and viewers alike.
