Eiko Yamada is a highly respected Japanese voice actress and stage actress, born on June 13, 1953, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Her real name is Eiko Hisamura, and she has been affiliated with the talent agency 81 Produce since 2015. Yamada began her career in 1979 and quickly established herself as a versatile performer, renowned for voicing a wide array of characters, from spirited young boys to strong-willed heroines.

Yamada is perhaps most celebrated for her extensive and iconic work in Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater television series. Her debut role was the lead character, Anne Shirley, in the 1979 series Anne of Green Gables, a part she was chosen for by director Isao Takahata. She went on to become the series' most frequent cast member, appearing in over ten productions. Other significant roles in the franchise include the headstrong Jo March in both Tales of Little Women and its sequel Little Women II Jo's Boys, the antagonistic Lavinia Herbert in A Little Princess Sara, and Jimmy Bean in Pollyanna.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Yamada's voice became a staple in numerous hit anime series. She demonstrated a remarkable ability to portray young male characters, such as soccer player Tarō Misaki in the original Captain Tsubasa, the titular robot dog Gin in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, and Shotaro Kaneda in the 1980 version of Tetsujin 28-go. Her filmography also includes roles like the villainous Mai in the Dragon Ball series, Aramis in Anime Sanjushi, and Tsubasa Kurenai in Ranma ½. In addition to animation, she has lent her voice to numerous foreign film and drama dubs, including the role of Vasquez in a Japanese television broadcast edition of Aliens.

Her talent and longevity in the industry have been officially recognized. In 2024, Yamada was honored with the Merit Award at the 18th Seiyu Awards, celebrating her outstanding contribution to voice acting. Even after a period of reduced activity in the early 2000s, she has continued to work, with recent roles including Keiko Yozakura in Mission: Yozakura Family and Kiyo Aieda in Narenare -Cheer for You! in 2024. Eiko Yamada's career is defined by her remarkable versatility and her indelible mark on some of Japan's most beloved animated classics.
