Description
Mrs. Ōbayashi is the wife of Mr. Ōbayashi and the mother of their daughter, Tamami, in the anime What's Michael?. She is a housewife who spends most of her time at home, which means she interacts with the family cat Michael far more often than her husband does. Although Michael and his ever‑growing family of cats frequently cause messes and mischief, Mrs. Ōbayashi handles the chaos with a patient, cheerful attitude. She is bright‑spirited and resilient, rarely losing her temper for long even when the cats test her patience. Her primary motivation is maintaining a harmonious household; she genuinely cares for Michael and later for his mate Poppo and their kittens, and she works to keep the peace between the animals and her family. Within the story, she serves as the main human anchor for the domestic episodes, providing a warm but mildly exasperated perspective on the cats’ antics. Her key relationships are with her husband, with whom she shares a comfortable, slightly humorous marriage; with her daughter Tamami, whom she nurtures with affection; and with Michael, whom she treats as a beloved but mischievous member of the family. Over the course of the series, Mrs. Ōbayashi’s life changes as the family moves from an apartment to a house and as Tamami grows from a baby into a toddler who can speak in short phrases. In later volumes, Mrs. Ōbayashi is depicted as having gained weight, a small sign of the passage of time. One of her notable abilities is an uncanny knack for understanding languages that other people cannot decipher: she can interpret Michael’s meows, Tamami’s baby talk, and even her husband’s mumbled or vague utterances, making her the household’s unofficial translator.
