Description
Mrs. Emerson occupies a position of social prominence in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. As the mother of Roger and Mary Emerson, she strongly disapproves of her son Roger's relationship with Eliza Thomas, citing class differences and social standing. This prompts her active opposition to their union, becoming a driving force behind Roger and Eliza's decision to elope, defying her wishes.
Following their marriage, Mrs. Emerson persists in her stance, refusing contact or reconciliation with the couple for an extended period. However, her perspective shifts after the birth of Roger and Eliza's children. Mrs. Emerson eventually reconciles with her son and daughter-in-law, welcoming them back. She develops a warm relationship with her grandchildren and transitions into a supportive family role, providing financial assistance as Roger and Eliza establish their household.
