TV-Series
Description
Chu Chu is a small, monkey-like creature and a constant companion to Anthy Himemiya in Revolutionary Girl Utena. Resembling a tiny plush toy or a keychain charm, he has notably large ears and is sometimes mistaken for a mouse due to his diminutive size. He is identified as male and is often considered Anthy's only true friend, acting as her loyal confidant.
In terms of personality, Chu Chu is playful, mischievous, and serves as a source of comic relief. He is often seen getting into trouble, making funny faces, or reacting dramatically to the situations around him. Despite his silly exterior, he is deeply caring and protective of Anthy. He harbors an intense dislike for Kyouichi Saionji, who frequently mistreats both Anthy and Chu Chu himself, and he immediately warms up to Utena Tenjou, recognizing her as someone who will protect Anthy as well. He also demonstrates a flirtatious side, as seen when he shows interest in the character Tatsuya Kazami.
Chu Chu's role in the story extends beyond simple comic relief; he functions as a narrative and symbolic extension of Anthy's inner world. He is the initial catalyst for Utena's first duel. When Utena sees Saionji abusing Chu Chu, she states that she is fighting to protect the small animal, an excuse that allows her to mask her true desire to save Anthy from her abusive engagement. This moment is pivotal, as Anthy's genuine smile in response marks the beginning of a true connection between her and Utena. His actions often reflect Anthy's suppressed feelings, expressing hostility toward her enemies or showing affection for her allies in ways she cannot. He is deeply connected to the series' themes, acting as a familiar who represents the parts of Anthy she keeps hidden.
His key relationships are defined by their connections to Anthy. He is fiercely loyal to Anthy and dislikes anyone who harms her, particularly Saionji. He greatly admires Utena, seeing her as a true prince who can save them both. A significant visual detail is that Chu Chu wears an earring and a necktie identical to those worn by Akio Ootori, Anthy's brother and the series' primary antagonist. This symbolizes Anthy's former attachment to Akio.
Chu Chu experiences a subtle but meaningful development alongside Anthy. While he does not undergo a drastic personality change, his final act is one of liberation. In the last episode, as Anthy prepares to leave Ohtori Academy and break free from her brother's control, Chu Chu removes his tie and earrings, leaving them on Akio's desk. This symbolic gesture represents his, and by extension Anthy's, rejection of Akio and her old life as the Rose Bride. He then leaves the academy with Anthy to help her search for Utena.
Regarding his abilities, Chu Chu does not possess any overt magical powers. He is, however, highly expressive and surprisingly resilient, often popping up in unexpected places and surviving situations that would be dangerous for a creature his size for the sake of a gag. He is capable of understanding human speech and complex social situations, allowing him to react appropriately to the drama unfolding around him. In the film adaptation of the series, Chu Chu only makes a brief cameo appearance and does not play a significant role in that version of the story.
