Description
Goma-chan's name is uniformly spelled in official media, with no verified "Gomu-chan" variants. He is a baby gomafu seal resembling a small white harp seal, featuring black eyes with white pupils, three thin black whiskers on each side of his mouth, and a light gray area around his pink mouth. Despite his size, he remains light enough for a first-grader to carry under one arm.

Introduced in the 1988 manga, Goma-chan was discovered by the Ashibe family after falling from a moving truck. Initially mistaken for a large fish and nearly consumed, he was identified as a seal and adopted as a pet, with his name derived from the species identification by Ashibe's father.

He displays high affection, nuzzling Ashibe immediately upon meeting. Goma-chan forms an intense bond with Ashibe, following him everywhere—including to school—and communicates through high-pitched "Kyu!" vocalizations. He physically interacts with the family, such as slapping them awake to serve as an alarm clock. His personality blends playfulness and curiosity, often mimicking human activities like writing with markers or riding scooters. He experiences separation anxiety when apart from Ashibe and envisions himself attending school as a human in dream sequences.

Across sequels, Goma-chan ages alongside Ashibe: appearing during Ashibe's second-grade years in "ComaGoma" (2000–2004), his third-grade life in "Shō 3 Ashibe QQ Goma-chan" (2020–present), and as Ashibe enters high school in "Seishōnen Ashibe" (2017–2024).

Anime adaptations—including the 1991–1993 series (where "Shōnen Ashibe 2" forms the second season) and the 2016–2019 "Go! Go! Goma-chan" reboot—retain his core traits. Storylines focus on his integration into human life, interacting with Ashibe’s friends Yuma and Mao, and facing challenges like potential relocation due to his species.

Design varies slightly between media: the original manga and 1990s anime offer detailed visuals, while the 2016 reboot simplifies features with brighter colors. Consistent throughout are his identifiable markings and expressive eyes.
