TV-Series
Description
Matako Kijima is the only female member of the Kiheitai, an extremist Joui faction originally dedicated to overthrowing the shogunate through violent means. In the alternate school-setting spin-off Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class, she appears as a student at Ginpachi High School, presumably in Class 3-Z, retaining her core traits from the main continuity. She is a skilled gunslinger known as the Red Bullet, demonstrating extraordinary aim with a pair of revolvers and the physical reflexes to dodge incoming fire. Her background involves a past as part of a circus troupe, where she became close friends with Bansai Kawakami, Henpeita Takechi, and Heiji Kozenigata; they later joined the Kiheitai together. Personality-wise, Matako is fiercely loyal to the group’s leader, Shinsuke Takasugi, toward whom she harbors romantic feelings. She is quick-tempered and prone to screeching when upset, engaging in childish spats with characters like Kagura. Despite her explosive exterior, she shows a softer, more vulnerable side, especially around Takasugi, and she cries frequently during emotionally charged moments. Her motivations are driven by devotion to her comrades, particularly Takasugi, and a desire to protect them at any cost. In the story, she serves as a supporting character who provides tactical firearms support and comedy relief. Her key relationships include her unrequited crush on Takasugi, her respectful but teasing dynamic with Takechi (whom she calls senpai and sometimes insults), and her conflicted interactions with Nizou Okada. Over the course of the series, Matako gains more screen time and development, particularly in later arcs, where her resilience and loyalty are tested. She survives intense battles and remains an enduring presence within the Kiheitai. Her notable abilities are her unparalleled marksmanship, her ability to reload and fire rapidly, and her agility in close-quarters combat, making her a formidable fighter despite her relatively small stature.
