Description
Kiyohara Shinano-no-kami is a character from the manga and anime series The Elusive Samurai. He is a nobleman of the anti-Hojo faction who is appointed by Emperor Go-Daigo as the new governor of Shinano Province. Despite his low family status, he is elevated to this powerful position, becoming a symbol of the new imperial regime in the region. He is the superior of the samurai Sadamune Ogasawara, though his subordinates generally regard him as an incompetent ally.

As a ruler, Kiyohara is arrogant, authoritarian, and despotic. He refers to his governed territory as Maroworld, a name that reflects his self-centered and condescending attitude toward the land and its people. He ignores established customs and laws, imposing heavy taxes on the populace and brutally killing anyone who dares to resist him, using the emperor's authority as a shield for his tyranny. Despite his villainous methods, his ambition to change the world is portrayed as genuine, and his sincere determination is recognized by Emperor Go-Daigo himself. He is an idealist who becomes a despot, perhaps a man born in the wrong era.

Kiyohara is an unconventional figure on the battlefield. He lacks the common knowledge of samurai warfare, which leads to him being disdained by warriors, but it also allows him to possess a unique and original creativity. He is a visionary inventor, renowned for developing new weapons and structures, which earns him the nickname Kasha Oni, or Fire Chariot Oni, during the Nanboku-cho period. His special skills include the ability to invent new technologies over time and a talent for archery.

In the spring of 1334, Kiyohara’s misrule provokes a rebellion led by Yasaburo Hoshina. He orders a pursuit of the rebels but fails due to repeated blunders, and after nearly being killed in a snowstorm, he loses his will to fight and flees back to the capital in shame. In Kyoto, he is unexpectedly encouraged by Emperor Go-Daigo, who admires his drive to overturn the established order. Revitalized, he returns to Shinano and personally leads an expedition in March 1335, taking to the battlefield on a new invention called the Battle Mikoshi. However, he is ultimately defeated and retreats again, this time losing the emperor's trust.

Abandoned by the court and overcome with despair, Kiyohara encounters Ashikaga Takauji. Takauji exploits his weakness, infusing him with a demonic divine power that strips him of his free will and transforms him into a violent, out-of-control creature. During the Nakasendai Rebellion, now a demon, Kiyohara constructs a massive war chariot, a giant tank bristling with crossbows, which he crews with private soldiers and slaves abducted from his own domain to overcome its logistical flaws. He sits in the turret of this chariot, turning himself into a true fire demon. His terrifying ingenuity is admired by the Suwa leader Yorishige and the priestess Shizuku, who also feel pity for his tragic, corrupted state.

Kiyohara meets his end during the battle against the forces of Suwa Yorishige and Tokiyuki Hojo. They devise a strategy to counter his divine power, and Tokiyuki successfully strikes him with a sacred obsidian arrow infused with divine power, which burns away the evil within him. Immobilized, Kiyohara is held down and beheaded by Yasaburo Hoshina, the same rebel whose uprising first exposed his weaknesses. In his final moments, he expresses remorse and confusion, crying out Takauji’s name and questioning for whom he was trying to build his dream world. He is a tragic figure of immense ambition and innovative talent who, with a different destiny or better guidance, might have become a great leader.
