Description
Daikyo Oboro is a fictional character from the Shaman King Flowers manga and anime series, known as the Misfortune-Bearing Ronin, a Japanese swordsman who serves as the guardian ghost of Asakura Yohane. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Oboro was raised and trained with katanas during the Meiji Restoration, a period when swords were becoming obsolete in favor of firearms. He was once a noble samurai, but with the ban on katanas, he was forced into the army alongside many of his former comrades. One day, while drinking, he visited these former comrades, who all pointed their guns at him. In a drunken rage, Oboro attacked them, prompting them to shoot him dead with their guns. This backstory heavily informs his gruff and somewhat cynical personality; he is a spirit who carries the weight of a violent and dishonorable end, embodying the misfortune suggested by his title.

As a ghost, Oboro is a skilled and seasoned warrior who takes his duty as a guardian spirit seriously. He has a pragmatic and no-nonsense attitude, often displaying a level of impatience or frustration, particularly with his young partner, Yohane. Despite his tough exterior, he is fiercely loyal and dedicated to fighting alongside Yohane. His primary motivation stems from his role as a guardian ghost, committed to serving his master and helping him achieve his goals, which in the story often involve confronting other members of the Asakura family. Oboro drives Yohane to become stronger and more capable in battle, pushing him to master their combined techniques.

In the narrative of Shaman King Flowers, Oboro plays a significant role as the primary spirit ally of Yohane Asakura, a key rival to the protagonist, Hana Asakura. He and Yohane engage in battle with Hana on two separate occasions. While they lose both fights, with Yohane suffering a broken arm in their second encounter, these confrontations establish Oboro as a formidable enemy. His presence and abilities challenge Hana and his own spirit, Amidamaru, forcing both to improve. Oboro is also central to the combat strategy of his shaman, providing the spiritual power necessary for their Over Souls and integration techniques. His most notable relationship is with Yohane Asakura, his master and partner, with whom he shares a bond of mutual reliance, though their interactions are often terse. He also shares a rivalry of sorts with Amidamaru, Hana’s guardian ghost, as their shaman masters are rivals; Amidamaru recognizes Oboro as a fellow samurai and acknowledges the strength of his Over Soul.

Regarding development, Oboro’s character arc is largely tied to his partnership with Yohane. While his personality remains consistent, their teamwork evolves as they learn to combine their powers more effectively. This evolution culminates in the use of a combined Over Soul with another shaman, Asakura Luca, through a technique known as Gion Gattai.

Oboro’s notable abilities are showcased through his synergy with Yohane. Their most basic technique is a soul integration (Hyoi Gattai), where Yohane uses an umbrella as a substitute for Oboro’s sword and covers his right eye to match Oboro’s field of vision. In this state, they can perform attacks such as the Misty Moon Slicer (Oboro Zangetsu), a wide-arcing umbrella swing, and the Kyosha, a powerful thrusting technique that Oboro claims could have blown a hole in an opponent’s stomach had he been wielding his own katana. Their primary Over Soul is Tsukuyomi, a weapon-type Over Soul that creates an oversized lance resembling a Gion Festival float’s mast, using the umbrella as a medium. According to Amidamaru, the strength of Tsukuyomi is on par with Yoh Asakura’s Spirit of Sword Over Soul. From this form, Yohane can execute the Moonlit Comet (Tsukiyo no Habakiboshi), a powerful piercing attack. Furthermore, Oboro can be used in a combined Over Soul called Byg-Salem, formed with the spirits and mediums of both Yohane and Asakura Luca, which merges the strength of Tsukuyomi with the speed of Luca’s Over Soul, Amaterasu.
