TV-Series
Description
Kaoru Kiryuu is a character who first appears as an antagonist before becoming a crucial ally to the Pretty Cure. Her journey begins in the land of Dark Fall, where she was created by the villain Akudaikan alongside her sister, Michiru. Their original purpose was to guard the Fountain of Sky, a task that left both sisters feeling profound loneliness, finding comfort only in each other. As part of a mission to destroy the Pretty Cure warriors Hyuuga Saki and Mishou Mai, Kaoru and Michiru infiltrated Yuunagi Middle School as exchange students to earn the Cures’ trust and discover their weaknesses.

In terms of personality, Kaoru initially presents a calm, rational, and somewhat cold exterior. She is often blunt and appears unsociable towards her classmates, though this demeanor masks a growing inner empathy. Despite her cool and detached facade, she is actually more emotionally driven than her sister, and her feelings can influence her actions significantly. She is highly intelligent and athletic, able to excel in her studies and sports with little effort. A key aspect of her personality is her tendency to treat others as equals, such as when she gives genuine advice to Minori, Saki's younger sister, without condescension. As the story progresses, her initial coldness melts away, revealing a more open, vulnerable, and compassionate individual.

Kaoru’s core motivation shifts dramatically over time. Initially, she is driven by her duty to Dark Fall and the desire to destroy all worlds, as commanded by her creator. However, as she spends genuine time with Saki, Mai, and others, she begins to question her purpose. Her internal conflict grows as she finds herself caring for the people she was meant to betray. Her ultimate motivation becomes the desire to protect her new friends and find her own identity beyond being a tool of destruction, eventually expressing a simple dream of drawing pictures together with Mai and Minori.

Her role in the overall story is that of a redeemed foe. After being ordered to confront the Cures directly, Kaoru and Michiru choose to sacrifice themselves to protect Saki and Mai from Akudaikan’s fury, leading to their apparent destruction and the erasure of everyone’s memories of them. Later, with the help of Princess Filia and the spirits, they are revived to help fight against the revived Dark Fall executives. In the final battle, she is granted the power of the wind and transforms into Cure Windy, a form akin to a Pretty Cure, to help defeat the ultimate enemy, Goyan.

In the sequel series, Power of Hope: Precure Full Bloom, which depicts the characters as adults, Kaoru has a new and distinct role. Along with her sister Michiru, she co-founds an internet channel called Dark Night Light. Kaoru adopts the online persona of "Night," often depicted as a humanoid cat-like figure. Their channel gains global attention by showcasing beautiful and uplifting content, such as following stray cats or highlighting local restaurants. When a new crisis emerges involving creatures known as Shadows, Kaoru and Michiru use their platform to publicly coin the term "Shadow" and provide real-time information and tracking. They offer indirect support to their former allies by promoting Saki’s family bakery and amplifying a new song by their friends. When the situation escalates in Tokyo, they intervene directly to rescue Saki and Mai, revealing their non-human origins to the new generation of Pretty Cure and explaining that their channel’s purpose is to help people recognize the world’s value.

Kaoru’s key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with her sister Michiru is unbreakable, and the two are almost always together, with Kaoru often deferring to Michiru in social situations while secretly admiring her sister's communication skills. Her friendships with Saki and Mai are what ultimately save her, as their genuine kindness makes her question her destructive mission. She develops a particularly strong and protective affection for Minori, treating the younger girl as an equal and becoming a trusted confidante and guardian. Through her interactions with Mai, she discovers a love for drawing and joins the art club, a passion she carries with her into adulthood. She also shares a deep, longstanding bond with the spirits Moop and Fuup, whom she and Michiru had rescued long ago.

Kaoru’s character development is profound. She transforms from an artificial being created for destruction, who knew only loneliness, into a genuinely caring individual who values friendship and life. This change is marked by subtle yet significant visual cues, such as her eye color shifting from blue to a softer pale wisteria after her revival, signifying her newfound humanity and capacity for deeper connection. By the time of the adult sequel, she has channeled her mysterious and observant nature into creating content that spreads hope and positivity, using her past experiences to help protect the world in her own unique way.

Regarding her notable abilities, Kaoru possesses tremendous physical skill and intelligence. In her initial battles, she fights using dark red energy bullets and formidable hand-to-hand combat skills. Her most significant power is inheriting the Power of the Wind, allowing her to transform into Cure Windy. In this form, her hair grows longer, and she wears a sky-blue flowing robe. She can conjure powerful pink-tinged gusts of wind with the chant "Winds of the heavens!" to sweep away her foes. As an adult, she demonstrates no combat abilities but showcases proficiency in technology, media, and broadcasting, operating high-level internet channels and using analytical skills to track supernatural phenomena.
