Description
Chronosto, known as the Time Beast Chronosto, serves as the primary antagonist in Witchy Precure! -MIRAI DAYS-. Chronosto is an ancient and formidable supernatural entity whose existence predates the creation of the universe, established before even the concepts of chaos or life itself, marking it as older than both the embodiment of chaos, Deusmast, and the symbol of life, Mother RaPaPa.
In terms of its nature and background, Chronosto is not a being that operates on a standard moral spectrum. As an entity born before time, its only genuine desire is to absorb all of time and freeze space, ultimately halting all change and progression. To achieve this goal, it deviously exploited the emotional vulnerabilities of Ire, a young man consumed by grief and a desire to return to his happiest past memories. Chronosto spent a significant period disguised as Ire's seemingly ordinary pet puppy, patiently waiting for the right moment to reveal its true nature and use Ire's wish as a catalyst for its own plans.
Before its full awakening, Chronosto often operated through proxies or puppets. Its "true body" remained hidden, and it used these facsimiles to interact with the world. Its personality is characterized as cunning, calculating, and ruthless. It speaks in a calm and surprisingly aesthetic tone, which creates a chilling contrast with its malevolent actions and bizarre true form. A notable verbal quirk is its habit of ending sentences with "wan," a Japanese onomatopoeia for a dog's bark, a remnant of its long period of being disguised as a canine.
Chronosto's primary role in the story is to serve as the mastermind behind the series' events, the final boss that the Cures must confront. Its method of attack is psychological and insidious rather than purely physical. It identifies individuals who are trapped by nostalgia or regret and offers them a seemingly perfect escape by trapping them in an illusion of their happiest past memory. When Chronosto absorbs a person's "time" in this way, their physical body transforms into a stone statue of the object that represents their happiest moment, effectively freezing them in an eternal, unchanging dream. Among its key victims were Ire, who became a statue of his mother's wand, and Sota, a friend of the protagonist, who turned into a soccer ball. This power was not limited to individuals; Chronosto proved capable of launching large-scale assaults, freezing entire populations, such as when it successfully trapped nearly all the residents of the Magic World, including powerful dark wizards and school officials, within stone statues.
The character's development is tied to its gradual acquisition of power. Initially, it was a shadowy figure, but as it consumed more time, it grew stronger. After absorbing a significant amount of time from both the non-magic and magic worlds, Chronosto was able to power up and reveal a more potent and direct form. In its final confrontation with the Pretty Cures, Chronosto demonstrated its ultimate ability by freezing time across all worlds and trapping the Cures' consciousnesses within their own personal pasts, attempting to make them forsake the future entirely. However, its core philosophy was ultimately its downfall. The Cures and their fairy companion, Mofurun, rejected its stagnant ideal world by choosing hope, remembering their bonds, and embracing the unknown future. Chronosto was ultimately destroyed by the Cures' combined final attack, shattering into pieces and, in its final moments, acknowledging the resumption of time with the will, "time, moving again".
In terms of notable abilities, Chronosto possesses immense power over temporal forces. It can stop time, view the past and future, and freeze the time of others, consuming it to increase its own power. It can create a special "Space Field" for its battles and generate numerous weaker alter-egos or shadows to attack multiple targets simultaneously. Perhaps its most devastating ability is the creation of a Lotus-Eater Machine-like illusion that forces victims to relive their happiest memory, trapping their minds while it consumes their temporal energy.
