Description
Spinel is a major antagonist and a high-ranking Admin of the Explorers, a mysterious organization pursuing the protagonists of Pokémon Horizons. He stands out among his colleagues due to his calculated, patient, and exceptionally cruel methods. In the hierarchy of the Explorers, he answers directly to the group's leader, Gibeon, who assigned him the mission to retrieve Liko's pendant after the initial failures of another admin, Amethio.
Physically, Spinel is a tall, slender young man with distinctive long, shoulder-length cyan or teal hair that features darker tips and many fluffy, messy strands. His eyes are an unusual combination of a soft pink color that fades into a sky blue towards the bottom. He is rarely seen without his partner Pokémon, an Umbreon, which is often by his side and which he is known to affectionately pat on the head.
Spinel’s personality is defined by his cold, manipulative, and highly intelligent nature. He operates with a level of cunning that makes him one of the most dangerous and cruel antagonists in the series. Unlike the more headstrong Amethio, Spinel prefers to work from the shadows, relying on deception, psychological warfare, and strategic ambushes rather than direct confrontation. He is a master of disguise, able to change his appearance and personality to move in public without revealing his true identity. He is also a skilled hacker and information manipulator, commonly using the internet to spread false information to divide his targets and lead them into traps. His ruthlessness knows few bounds; he has no qualms about directly attacking or psychologically harming children to achieve his goals, as demonstrated when he had his Beheeyem brainwash and erase Liko's memories to steal her pendant.
Despite his usually calm and level-headed demeanor, Spinel is prone to moments of unhinged behavior when confronted with phenomena he does not understand. This was first seen when he witnessed an ancient Arboliva emerge from a Poké Ball, causing him to lose his composure and laugh maniacally at its fascinating nature. He is extremely condescending and dismissive towards others, holding a deep-seated rivalry with his fellow admin, Amethio. Spinel openly mocks Amethio's failures, doubts his reports, and actively schemes against him. His envious and vindictive nature culminated in a plot to have Amethio expelled from the Explorers by framing him as a traitor. To his superiors, particularly Gibeon, Spinel is formal, obedient, and happily accepts any mission given to him.
Spinel's primary motivation is the fulfillment of his missions for the Explorers, but he is also driven by a powerful, obsessive curiosity. Initially tasked with retrieving Liko's pendant, he became increasingly fascinated by its true nature as the legendary Pokémon Terapagos and the ancient Poké Balls connected to it. He is not content to simply submit reports on unverified information and expresses a strong personal desire to understand the truth behind these ancient artifacts. This scientific curiosity, however, is amoral; he is willing to harm both humans and his own Pokémon to see the results of his experiments, such as exposing his own Umbreon to a dangerous substance called Laquium to observe its psychotic effects and Terapagos's reaction.
Within the story of Pokémon Horizons, Spinel serves as a persistent and overwhelming threat to the Rising Volt Tacklers. He is first assigned to the mission after Amethio's repeated failures. His role is often that of a behind-the-scenes orchestrator, using his team of Pokémon to spy on the group, sabotage their airship, and mislead them. He successfully steals Liko's pendant, though he is later forced to retreat when the pendant's power summons an ancient Arboliva. Undeterred, he continues to gather intelligence, set traps for the heroes, and even goes undercover to investigate projects like the Eternal Blessing. His actions have lasting consequences, including the temporary erasure of Liko's memories and the expulsion of Amethio, which shifts the balance of power within the Explorers.
Spinel relies on a specific set of Pokémon, chosen for their utility in surveillance, disruption, and combat. His primary partner is an Umbreon, which he considers his ace and only sends out against worthy opponents or in dire circumstances. Umbreon is incredibly powerful and loyal. For his deceptive tactics, he uses a Beheeyem, whose psychic powers he exploits to hypnotize victims, erase their memories, and spy from a distance. He also employs a Magneton to create electrical interference that jams communications and disables electronics, though he can deploy large groups of them for a greater effect. He often directs these Pokémon remotely using radio transmitters, allowing him to remain hidden during operations.
Over the course of the series, Spinel’s development sees him transition from a mocking, behind-the-scenes manipulator to a more active and central schemer. His rivalry with Amethio escalates from professional sniping to outright sabotage, as he successfully frames his rival for treason. His detachment from any moral code becomes more pronounced, as he shows no hesitation in putting his own Pokémon through painful experiments. While he maintains his cold and calculating exterior, his obsession with the mysteries of Terapagos and the Laquium crystal reveals a deeply fixated and fanatical side, making him a uniquely sinister villain in the Pokémon anime.
