TV-Series
Description
Dot, also known online as Nidothing or Gurumin, is a prominent character in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. She is a young girl with shoulder-length purple hair that often covers her eyes, accented with pink highlights. As a member of the Rising Volt Tacklers, she lives aboard their airship, the Brave Olivine, where she plays a crucial role as the team's technical genius and system engineer. She is also the niece of the ship's chef, Murdock.
Dot lives a dual life, which is the core of her character. In her daily life aboard the airship, she is intensely reclusive and shy. She spends almost all her time alone in her room, rarely interacting with the other crew members face-to-face. Her reluctance to socialize is so pronounced that she often uses her partner Pokémon, a Quaxly, as a messenger to communicate with people like Liko and Roy. She finds group meals and direct social contact bothersome, preferring the solitude of her personal space.
However, online, she transforms into the complete opposite: Nidothing. In this persona, she is a popular and energetic streamer and influencer who creates cheerful, informative videos about Pokémon for young Trainers. Her online content is marked by an upbeat and perky demeanor, using exaggerated teaching methods to explain various topics related to being a Pokémon Trainer. As Nidothing, she always starts her streams with her signature catchphrase. This stark contrast between her private, introverted nature and her public, extroverted online persona is the central tension of her character.
Her motivations are deeply tied to this duality. Initially, Dot struggled to find inspiration for her Nidothing videos because she lacked real-world experience. It was only after meeting the Pokémon Professor and leader of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Friede, and receiving encouragement from the popular streamer and Paldea Gym Leader Iono, that she decided to join the group's adventures. This allowed her to gain the personal experiences she needed to make her content more authentic. While she is a genius programmer who created the Brave Olivine's main systems and a special communication app for the team, her primary motivation is not just technical work but to grow as a content creator by slowly stepping out of her comfort zone. She is also a fan of the book series Monthly Occulture.
In the story, Dot initially serves as a distant, unseen benefactor to the protagonists Liko and Roy, providing them with cryptic clues and information about the legendary Black Rayquaza through drawings delivered by her Quaxly. Her role deepens as she forms key relationships. She develops a significant friendship with Liko, whose persistent kindness helps Dot begin to open up. Liko is also an avid fan of Nidothing, unaware that the reclusive girl in the next room is her favorite streamer. This creates a major personal hurdle for Dot, who eventually confesses her secret identity to Liko and later to Roy, marking a major step in her development. Her friendship with Roy starts with her finding him annoying, but after they team up to search for a missing Liko and battle the antagonistic Explorers together, she comes to see him as a friend.
Her relationship with Iono is also vital. Iono is a fellow streamer and an idol to Dot, and the two have a collaborative friendship. Dot has referred to Iono as an older sister figure, and once called on her for help in a scheme to locate Liko in the city of Levincia.
Dot undergoes considerable development throughout the series. Her arc focuses on overcoming her social anxiety and learning to trust others. She gradually becomes more comfortable leaving her room, interacting with her crewmates, and letting Liko and Roy into her private space. A significant milestone in her growth occurs when she battles her own mother, who is overprotective and has trouble understanding her daughter's desire for independence. Through this Pokémon battle, Dot proves her strength and determination, finally earning her mother's full approval to continue traveling with the Rising Volt Tacklers. She also finds the courage to move past her discomfort with being filmed outside of her Nidothing costume, thanks to encouragement from her Quaxly.
Regarding her notable abilities, Dot is a certified genius when it comes to computers and programming. She was responsible for developing the entire technological infrastructure of the Brave Olivine and created the Pokédex system used by the Rising Volt Tacklers. She also designed a team-exclusive app installed on everyone's Rotom Phone. Her hacking skills are sharp enough to create a program on the fly that can shut down advanced machinery used by the Explorers. As a Pokémon Trainer, she is competent in battle, with her partner Quaxly being her first and most trusted Pokémon. She later catches a Tinkatink, a Pokémon whose determined personality contrasts with her own and helps her grow. She also participates in the Tera Training program at Naranja Academy, where she has passed basic and implementation battle exams against Gym Leaders Iono and Larry.
