Description
Pochita is the main character of the anime My Life as Inukai-san's Dog. He is a male high school student who, at the start of the story, has somehow been transformed into a dog, seemingly a Shiba Inu. His original human name is never revealed; the name Pochita is given to him by his classmate Karen Inukai when she discovers him as a stray and takes him home as her pet.
Before the transformation, Pochita was a quiet and somewhat withdrawn student who belonged to the school's gardening club. He had few social interactions and felt self-conscious about being a boy who enjoyed plants. A small, kind remark from Karen, who told him that liking something different did not make him strange, left a strong impression on him and eventually grew into a deep crush on her.
The change into a dog occurs on Valentine's Day, when Pochita eats chocolate given to him by a girl named Inari Sakahira. After eating it, he loses consciousness and wakes up in the body of a dog. Karen finds him lying on the street and brings him home, unaware that her new pet is actually her classmate. The story is largely told from his perspective at dog level, and much of the series' comedy comes from the contrast between his fully intact human awareness and his situation as a pet.
In terms of personality, Pochita is earnest, loyal, and genuinely caring. He is also frequently flustered, caught between his human emotions and his canine instincts. His central motivation is to return to human form so that he can confess his feelings to Karen properly, as a person rather than as a dog. At the same time, he is constantly conflicted, because life as Karen's beloved pet is warm and comfortable. He struggles every day to resist the pleasure of being doted on, aware that the longer he stays in this life, the more his mind and heart risk becoming fully canine.
His main relationship is with Karen Inukai. At school, she appears cool, expressionless, and distant, known to others as the Ice Princess, but she is secretly an extreme dog lover. In private, away from everyone else, she is affectionate, playful, and openly indulgent with her pet. Through this hidden side of her, Pochita gets to know a version of Karen that no one at school ever sees. He also encounters other characters connected to her, including Mike Nekotani and Usagi Tsukishiro, who become part of his daily experiences, and his origins are tied to Inari Sakahira, whose chocolate set the entire situation in motion.
As the story progresses, Pochita learns more about Karen's past, including that she once had a beloved dog also named Pochita during her childhood, and that the death of that dog caused her to close her heart and adopt her cool public persona. The irony deepens his connection to her, as he comes to understand her better than any ordinary pet could. In his dog form, Pochita retains full human memory and consciousness, which lets him observe and comprehend the people around him, even though he can only express himself through dog behavior. He also experiences heightened canine instincts and physical reactions that often override his human restraint, adding to his internal struggle and to the story's lighthearted tone.
His development centers on reconciling two desires: the wish to become human again and confess his love, and the genuine happiness and closeness he finds in his life as Karen's dog. Over the course of the series, he grows from a lonely student into someone who experiences a uniquely intimate bond with the girl he admires, all while trying to hold on to his humanity.
