Description
Captain Gorman is a character who appears in a single episode of the series as an antagonist and a high-ranking officer of the Vegan Empire. He arrives on Earth under the direct orders of King Vega to assume command of the invasion effort, marking his role as the first Vegan commander to be featured in the narrative. As a member of King Vega’s royal guard, Gorman holds a position of elite status and considerable authority within the empire’s military hierarchy.

In terms of personality, Gorman is defined by extreme arrogance and a dismissive attitude toward his allies. He is a heavy drinker, often seen consuming alcohol in various settings. His arrogance is most evident in his unwavering belief that he can single-handedly defeat Grendizer without any assistance from other Vegan commanders such as Gandal or Blaki. This self-assurance borders on contempt for his peers, as he openly refers to Blaki as a failure for previously being unable to destroy the robot. His loyalty is exclusive and absolute, reserved only for King Vega, and he shows no respect for other officers in the Vegan hierarchy.

Gorman’s primary motivation is to fulfill his mission from King Vega by destroying Grendizer and proving his superior capabilities as a warrior of the royal guard. He seeks personal glory and the honor of defeating the enemy that has thwarted the Vegan forces, viewing this task as his own rightful conquest rather than a cooperative military operation.

In the story, Gorman’s role is that of a temporary but formidable field commander sent to rectify the failures of previous assaults. Upon his arrival, he immediately asserts dominance, even physically striking Blaki with his command baton for overstepping his authority by sitting in the command chair. He launches an attack on Earth piloting his personal Saucer Beast, Gingin (also spelled Gin Gin). His tactical approach is aggressive and direct, and he manages to place Grendizer in a difficult position during their battle, demonstrating his competence as a warrior.

The key relationship in Gorman’s story is his antagonistic dynamic with Colonel Blaki. Gorman rejects Blaki’s offered assistance and dismisses him as incompetent, creating immediate hostility between them. Blaki, humiliated by Gorman’s treatment, responds with betrayal. During the climax of the battle, when Gorman has Grendizer at a disadvantage, Blaki orders his MiniFO forces to attack Gorman from behind, shooting his Saucer Beast in the back and chest. This act of sabotage cripples Gorman’s machine, allowing Grendizer to recover and deliver the final blow with the Space Thunder attack, which destroys Gingin and kills Gorman.

Regarding development, Gorman shows little change or growth due to his brief appearance. He begins and ends his role as an arrogant, confident officer whose downfall comes not from being outmatched in combat, but from the treachery of an ally he scorned. Despite Blaki’s interference, it is acknowledged that Gorman and other members of the royal guard are among the most dangerous and efficient soldiers in the Vegan Empire, having undergone far more intense combat training than the average soldier.

In terms of notable abilities, Gorman is a highly skilled pilot capable of piloting his Saucer Beast, Gingin, with great proficiency. His piloting skill allows him to put Grendizer at a significant disadvantage in direct combat, a feat that other Vegan pilots struggled to achieve. His Saucer Beast is equipped with arm shields that function as both defensive barriers and offensive spinning saw blades, as well as optic laser beams. Despite his capabilities, his arrogance and the resulting betrayal by Blaki lead to his quick defeat, preventing him from fully demonstrating the extent of his potential as a Vegan royal guard commander.
