Description
Nanūk is a character from the ancient mythic period of Aquarion: Myth of Emotions, set twelve thousand years before the main story. He is the past life of Sakko Ōtori, one of the primary protagonists in the modern-day narrative. Nanūk is the son of Mark, the priest who governs the light of the sun. Despite his position as the son of a high-ranking priest, he is widely known as cowardly Nanūk, a label he himself accepts with a degree of self-deprecation. His timidity is a defining trait, but it is also later revealed to be a part of his gentle nature.
Nanūk’s central motivation revolves around his love for Sedna, the daughter of Atia, the priest of the moon’s blessings. The two come from opposing factions, yet they meet and fall in love. This relationship drives much of his actions, as he is willing to set aside his fears for her sake. His cowardice is not portrayed as a flaw in the negative sense; rather, it is seen by Sedna as something endearing, and it gives him a cautious, thoughtful demeanor.
In the mythic storyline, Nanūk plays a pivotal role in the events that shape the universe. When the goddess Mulua Satene possesses Sedna and begins to wreak destruction, Nanūk is forced to confront his deepest fears. To save Sedna and the world, he chooses to remove his own wings, thereby discarding his fear, and joins with other key figures—Haida, Sukuna, and the twins—to form the first mechanical heavenly wing, Aquarion. This act of self-sacrifice allows him to fight the goddess, ultimately leading to the splitting of the universe into a physical cosmos and a realm of emotions. His courage in that moment defines his character arc: from a timid boy to a hero who overcomes his own nature for the sake of love and the greater good.
Key relationships include his father Mark, who is part of the priestly hierarchy; Sedna, his beloved; and Haida, Sedna’s compassionate sister, as well as Sukuna, the scientist who created the early Aquarion. These connections weave together the myth that eventually leads to the reincarnation cycle bringing about the modern Elements.
Nanūk’s notable abilities are not explicitly defined as supernatural powers in the conventional sense. His strength lies in his emotional resolve and his willingness to endure personal transformation. By removing his wings, he gains the clarity and courage needed to pilot the original Aquarion, demonstrating that his growth comes from within rather than from external enhancements. This inner development is what allows him to become a key part of the universe’s creation myth.
Throughout the narrative, Nanūk evolves from a self-acknowledged coward into a decisive figure who accepts the weight of destiny. His story is one of love overcoming fear, and his legacy persists through the reincarnation of his soul in the modern character Sakko Ōtori.
