Description
Makoto Kusaka is the main protagonist of the anime Uchū Kūbo Blue Noah, known in the original Japanese version as Shin Kusaka. He is a student at a higher science academy in the year 2052 when an alien force called the Gotham (Godom) attacks Earth, causing catastrophic environmental changes and killing ninety percent of the human population. Makoto witnesses the death of his father, a scientist who was secretly involved in building the strategic carrier Blue Noah. In his final moments, his father gives him a mysterious pendant and tells him to go to Point N1, where Earth’s future lies. Makoto escapes the devastated capital with his school friends and a girl named Kei Domon, whom he meets amid the chaos. Following the pendant’s guidance, they reach the secret base in the Ogasawara Islands and discover Blue Noah. Makoto’s voice activates the ship, and he and his friends are enlisted as crew members of the small submarine Shīra.

Makoto starts as a somewhat impulsive and inexperienced youth, but he gradually matures through the harsh realities of war. He serves as the missile officer on the Shīra under Captain Shimizu, a stern but caring mentor. After Captain Shimizu sacrifices himself to save the Shīra, Makoto becomes the submarine’s acting captain. He later assumes the role of battle officer on Blue Noah itself. His key relationships include his growing bond with Kei, the daughter of Blue Noah’s captain Ei Domon, and his respect for Captain Domon, who becomes a father figure. His friendships with Hiroshi Izumi, Michiro Tamura, and the other young crew members are central to his emotional support and teamwork.

Makoto’s motivations are driven by his father’s legacy and a determination to reclaim Earth from the invaders. He is courageous and often willing to take risks, but he learns to balance that with strategic thinking. His notable abilities include his piloting skills, quick tactical judgment, and capacity to inspire others. In the final confrontation, after Captain Domon is fatally wounded, Makoto takes command of Blue Noah and devises a clever maneuver to defeat the Gotham commander Jurgens, using the ship’s phonon maser to strike from an unexpected angle. The series ends with Earth saved, and in later depictions, Makoto and Kei marry and establish an organization to prevent future alien threats. Throughout the story, Makoto evolves from a grieving student into a confident and capable leader, embodying the resilience of humanity in the face of overwhelming odds.
