Description
Nonoko Kishii is a fifteen-year-old girl who becomes a newly appointed dragon dentist in a war-torn land. She is the only volunteer to survive a brutal recruitment process that requires candidates to witness the exact manner of their own future death and accept it without resistance. This test shapes her entire outlook; she knows when and how she will die, yet she chooses to continue living and working with calm resolve. Her personality is bright and straightforward, and she maintains good relationships with those around her. She is fundamentally fearless and acts bravely, traits that serve her well in her role. Her primary mission is to protect the ancient dragon that serves as the guardian of her country by cleaning its teeth and defending it from tooth‑cavity bacteria, which can incapacitate the creature on the battlefield. One day, amid escalating conflict with a neighboring nation, she discovers an unconscious enemy soldier named Bernard Octavius, called Bell, who has been mysteriously resurrected from inside the dragon’s tooth—a phenomenon said to herald a great disaster. Nonoko takes Bell under her care and trains him as a dentist‑in‑training, forging a key relationship that challenges her understanding of duty and fate. Throughout the story, she confronts the grim realities of war, the weight of predetermined destiny, and the pain of loss. Her development centers on learning to accept not only her own prophesied end but also the unpredictable sorrows that come with caring for others. Despite her young age, she demonstrates remarkable composure and a willingness to face her fate without flinching, a quality that defines her role among the dragon dentists. She possesses no flashy supernatural powers; her notable abilities are her courage, her straightforward honesty, and her refusal to despair even when death is a certainty.
