Description
In the 1968 anime film Fables from Hans Christian Andersen, Karen is depicted as the spoiled daughter of the village mayor. Her background is one of privilege and entitlement, which has shaped her into a demanding and greedy child. The central object of her desire is a pair of magical red shoes, crafted by the shoemaker father of the young storyteller Hans, using special magic leather given to him by Uncle Oley, the Sandman. When these shoes are entered into a contest, Karen insists on having them and forcibly takes them for herself, showing no regard for the effort or feelings of others.

Driven by a strong sense of vanity, her primary motivation is the ownership of the red shoes purely for her own gratification. Her role in the story is directly tied to the shoes’ supernatural curse. The red shoes bear a powerful enchantment: any person with a greedy mind who wears them will be forced to dance forever. This curse is activated when Karen wears the shoes to the grand opera at the kingdom’s theatre. Once there, she suddenly begins to dance crazily and uncontrollably, causing a major disturbance and confusion among the audience.

A key relationship in the film is between Karen and the magic of the shoes, as well as her connection to Uncle Oley. While she does not have a direct relationship with Hans, her actions directly affect him; he had planned to use the prize money from the shoe contest to buy a ticket to the opera, a plan that is ruined by Karen’s selfishness. Her development is centered on a change in her way of thinking. After being forced to dance without end and suffering the terrifying consequences of her greed, she is ultimately saved by Uncle Oley, but only after she has reformed her greedy mindset. Her most notable ability is not a skill she possesses naturally but rather the result of the curse she triggers. When driven by vanity, the magical red shoes force her into a state of perpetual, crazed dancing, demonstrating the supernatural power of the fairytale world.
