Description
Kaoru Nagumo is a male demon and a significant antagonist who serves as the older twin brother of the protagonist, Chizuru Yukimura. Though he is born under the name Yukimura Kaoru, he comes to be known as the head of the Nagumo clan after being given to that family during his childhood.
In his childhood, Kaoru was naturally protective of his twin sister. He and Chizuru lived a relatively peaceful life in the Yukimura village until it was destroyed by humans. After the village's destruction, the Nagumo family sent a letter specifically requesting Chizuru to join them because they valued her as a female demon who could bear them children. Knowing this, Kaoru altruistically went to the Nagumo family in her place, sacrificing his own well-being to protect his sister. However, the Nagumo family became enraged upon discovering his deception and the fact that he was male, leading to unspecified abuse that warped his mind. This suffering, compounded by the belief that Chizuru does not remember him and therefore cannot recognize his sacrifice, causes him to blame his sister for his hardships. At some point, he also developed a habit of cross-dressing, likely as a result of his experiences.
By the time of the story, Kaoru is a deeply unbalanced, vengeful, and sadistic individual. He believes that both humans and demons are corrupted by power and sees no difference between the two species. His primary motivation is to make Chizuru suffer the same kind of hell he endured. He goes to great lengths to cause her pain, not caring who else is hurt in the process, with the twisted intention of making her understand his suffering so that she might eventually love him as he claims to love her. He also hopes to restore the Yukimura clan alongside the alchemist Kodo Yukimura, who is a distant relative rather than his true father, and build an army of Furies to exact revenge on all those he holds responsible for his pain.
In the story, Kaoru is initially encountered disguised as a lovely young woman, which leads members of the Shinsengumi to note his striking resemblance to Chizuru. He works as a spy for the Tosa domain and later collaborates closely with Kodo. He takes a particular interest in the Shinsengumi captain Okita Souji, whose tuberculosis he exploits. Kaoru offers Okita a special elixir called ochimizu, lying that it will cure his illness when in reality it transforms him into a Fury, a mindless, powerful being. He uses Okita as a tool to harm Chizuru, whom he knows cares for the captain. Over the course of his schemes, he orchestrates attacks on the Shinsengumi, engineers a shooting that wounds their commander Kondo Isami, and sets traps to endanger his sister. Kaoru is also the wielder of the Yukimura family heirloom katana, which is meant to be paired with the one Chizuru carries.
His relationship with Chizuru is the central axis of his character. His feelings are a complex and unhealthy mix of obsessive love, jealousy, and a craving for revenge. He resents that, as a female demon, she was always protected and valued more than him, confessing that he was jealous even as a child when their parents seemed to favor her. He seeks not just to hurt her but to break her down until she becomes his equal in suffering. He also has significant interactions with Okita, whom he manipulates, and eventually crosses paths with the demon Kazama Chikage, who ultimately kills Kaoru when he threatens Chizuru.
Despite his malicious plans and twisted personality, moments of vulnerability occasionally surface, such as when he claims to love his sister even as he tries to destroy her life. His final words, questioning why everything always went to Chizuru, underscore the deep-seated jealousy and pain that drove him to villainy. Kaoru is a capable swordsman, likely trained by the Nagumo family, and is proficient enough to fight against members of the Shinsengumi. He is also manipulative and cunning, using his feminine disguise to deceive those around him while he orchestrates his vengeful plans from the shadows.
