Description
Lumalee is a blue, star-shaped creature from the species known as Lumas, originally appearing in the Super Mario Galaxy video games as a shopkeeper who trades Star Bits for power-ups. In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Lumalee is reimagined as a prisoner in Bowser’s castle, held in a cage suspended over a lava pit alongside Luigi, the Penguin King, and other captives. The character possesses a cheerful, childlike voice that contrasts sharply with a deeply nihilistic and morbid personality. Lumalee openly embraces hopelessness, proclaiming that hope and time are illusions, that escape is impossible, and that death is the only release. This outlook annoys the other prisoners, particularly the Penguin King, who dismisses Lumalee as delusional. Lumalee finds joy in the prospect of dying in lava and appears visibly disappointed when Mario and Donkey Kong free everyone. Later, after the film’s conclusion, Lumalee appears directly to the audience, commenting that the infinite void remains, then plays a saxophone rendition of the Ground Theme from the original Super Mario Bros. game. The character does not undergo any significant development or change, remaining consistently nihilistic throughout. No special abilities are displayed in the movie; Lumalee’s role is primarily comedic relief, and the unexplained presence in Bowser’s dungeon hints at a possible connection to Rosalina and the larger Super Mario Galaxy storyline in potential sequels. Key relationships include the shared imprisonment with Luigi and the Penguin King, though Lumalee interacts with them mostly by making unsettling remarks.
