Movie
Description
Angie, whose full name is Angelina Dorothea Oceanus, is a central character in the film who presents herself under a false identity. She initially appears as an overseas video creator who comes to Japan with the simple request of finding her lost calico cat, a task she hires the protagonists to perform. In this guise, she often seems naive about the world and its dangers, for instance showing little reaction to inappropriate behavior and claiming ignorance of certain crude concepts. However, this persona is a complete fabrication designed to allow her to get close to her true target.
Her genuine background is that of a highly skilled mercenary and a member of Wetworks, an assassin team working for the criminal organization Union Teope. She was not born into this life; she was the sole survivor of a military family's home that was attacked by a unit led by a man she knows as Mayor, a figure she was subsequently raised by and holds in deep reverence. Within the organization, she was not given a mercenary name and was known as Anonimo, a Spanish or Italian word meaning nameless, highlighting her identity as a tool for the group. The name Angie is one she devised herself for the purpose of her mission.
Angie's core motivation is deeply personal and driven by a twisted sense of loyalty and rivalry. She worships Mayor, who raised her, and regards him as a god-like figure. Her primary goal is to confront Ryo Saeba, who was also raised by Mayor as a mercenary and was once hailed by him as his masterpiece. After finding a photograph of Mayor and Ryo smiling together, a genuine expression of happiness she had never received from him, she became consumed by jealousy and a desire to prove that she herself is his true masterpiece. Unlike her Wetworks colleagues, Angie refuses to use a dangerous performance-enhancing substance known as Angel Dust, and she actively works to destroy it, going against her organization's wishes.
In the story, Angie serves as both the client and a primary antagonist, though her role becomes more complex as the narrative unfolds. Her request to find her cat is merely a pretext to observe and eventually challenge Ryo. As she spends time with the protagonists, she begins to be affected by their sincere actions, which causes internal conflict. Her actions lead to her becoming a traitor to Union Teope, forcing her to fight off her former comrades who are sent to retrieve the Angel Dust and eliminate her. Her ultimate fate is tragic; she is forcibly injected with Angel Dust by her leader, losing control of her will and becoming an unkillable soldier. She is ultimately defeated and dies in the arms of the man she came to fight, finding peace only at the end.
Angie's key relationships are central to her character. Her most important connection is with Mayor, her leader and surrogate father figure, whose approval she desperately craves. Her relationship with Ryo Saeba is one of rivalry, jealousy, and a strange, unspoken bond born from their shared, brutal upbringing under Mayor. She sees him as the obstacle to her own validation. She also has a connection with Kaori Makimura, Ryo's partner, who remains unaware of Angie's true nature for much of their time together and treats her with kindness, contributing to Angie's inner turmoil.
Angie undergoes significant development, transitioning from a cold, focused operative driven by jealousy to a more tragic figure who begins to question her mission. The genuine interactions she has while pretending to be a simple video creator slowly break down her mercenary resolve. This culminates in her handing the dangerous Angel Dust over to Ryo and trying to disappear from their lives, a choice that ultimately fails and leads to her fatal confrontation. Her character arc is a tragic journey from seeking a father's approval to achieving a form of redemption through her final defeat and release from suffering.
In terms of abilities, Angie is a highly trained and formidable combatant, having been raised as a mercenary from a young age. She is proficient with firearms, notably using a silver Colt Python revolver with a speedloader, a weapon that mirrors Ryo's own choice, further emphasizing their connection. She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and is a capable operative. Her natural skills are temporarily and dramatically amplified when she is forcibly injected with Angel Dust, which grants her superhuman physical abilities and bulletproof resilience but at the cost of her sanity and free will.
