Description
Clare Kagenou is the elder sister of the protagonist, Cid Kagenou, and a key supporting character in the second season. She is a seventeen-year-old noblewoman from the rural Kagenou barony, a family renowned for producing knights who use magic to enhance their bodies in combat. As the heiress, Clare has trained extensively from a young age and possesses considerable natural talent and magical potential, making her one of the most promising students at the Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy.
Clare presents a paradoxical personality. On the surface, she acts as a strict, often violent older sister who frequently scolds her brother for being lazy and mediocre, dragging him into intense training sessions. This demeanor, however, masks an intense and deeply caring love for Cid. Her primary motivation is to protect and push her brother toward what she believes is his true potential. While she openly dismisses him as unreliable, she subconsciously holds a firm belief that he is capable of great things when he puts his mind to it, a conviction born from several instances in their childhood where he unknowingly saved her. This makes her fiercely protective; she will confront royalty or powerful institutions without hesitation if she feels Cid is threatened or wronged.
In the narrative of the second season, Clare’s role is significantly expanded, particularly during the Lawless City arc. Her primary drive to hunt down the vampire queen, Elisabeth, is rooted in a desire to prove her own strength and worth as a knight. When Cid goes missing in the chaotic city, she teams up with the vampire hunter Mary, and her quest shifts to finding her brother, leading her to the heart of the Crimson Tower. It is during the confrontation with Elisabeth that Clare experiences a pivotal event: she is gravely injured and forms a possession contract with Aurora, the Witch of Calamity. This bond leaves a magical mark on her hand, which she conceals with bandages, and grants her a mysterious, latent power that even she is not fully aware of.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her dynamic with Cid is the most important; it is built on a complete misunderstanding, as she is entirely unaware that her "weak" younger brother is the masked mastermind Shadow. Her obsessive care for him often manifests in ways he finds bothersome, yet his true identity as Shadow ensures that the entire Shadow Garden organization secretly treats her as a VIP, referring to her as "Lord Shadow's sister". Clare also has notable interactions with other female characters. Her initial rivalry with Alexia Midgar, Cid's false girlfriend, is marked by hostility, which only softens when Alexia comments that Clare is similar to her brother. Furthermore, her swordsmanship earns the respect of the First Princess, Iris Midgar, who seeks to recruit her into the prestigious Red Knights.
Throughout the second season and the subsequent narrative, Clare undergoes significant development. She achieves a major personal victory by winning the Bushin Festival, the kingdom’s top sword-fighting tournament, becoming a champion after stronger contenders withdraw. However, her path also leads to tragedy. The possession contract with Aurora marks a turning point, physically binding her to a powerful and dangerous entity and setting the stage for her future victimization. Unbeknownst to her, the Cult of Diablos retains a deep interest in her because of her cured demon possession, and she is eventually captured and used as a catalyst in a ritual to revive Diablos, leaving her in a deep, indefinite comatose state.
In terms of abilities, Clare is a prodigious magic swordsman. Her combat style centers on using magic to enhance her physical body, a traditional knightly technique. Her magical capacity and control were significantly increased as an unexpected side effect of Cid secretly curing her childhood demon possession, though she is unaware of this boost. She is a graduate-level sword fighter whose skill is recognized by the kingdom’s finest, and she has honed a special technique known as the Fast Flash Special, which allows her to move at incredible speeds over short distances. The contract with Aurora provides an additional, hidden well of power within her marked arm, making her a unique and potentially very powerful figure, even if she does not fully understand or control it.
