Description
559, also known as Victoria, is a high-ranking member of the Shadow Garden organization who appears in the second season of the anime. Her number, 559, designates her as the 559th agent recruited into the group, and she is notable for being one of the few members outside of the original Seven Shadows to have received her power directly from Shadow himself.
Before joining Shadow Garden, Victoria had a completely different life as a figure known as The Saint. She was an elf who served the Holy Church, acting as a leader of the Templars, a special heretical inquisition unit that ruthlessly slaughtered those believed to be possessed by demons. Her faith in the church was absolute, and she genuinely believed she was destroying evil. However, her entire worldview shattered when she herself began showing symptoms of demon possession. The same church that had revered her as a saint immediately denounced her as a devil and sentenced her to execution. This profound betrayal by the institution and people she trusted most fundamentally changed her. While awaiting death, she was saved by the timely intervention of Shadow, who was passing by. He cured her possession and brought her into Shadow Garden, giving her a new purpose and a new object of devotion.
The trauma of her past has shaped Victoria into a cold, harsh, and intimidating individual. The kind and naive girl who could not even kill a bug is gone, replaced by a ruthless operative who is utterly dedicated to the destruction of the Cult of Diabolos, the organization that had secretly controlled the church. Her defining characteristic is an intense, fanatical loyalty to Shadow, whom she views as her true god and savior. While she is usually stoic and lifeless in her expressions, this demeanor completely disappears in Shadow's presence, replaced by a devoted and almost love-struck enthusiasm. She is strict and demanding with her subordinates, expecting absolute commitment to the mission and showing little concern for the safety of innocent people if it serves Shadow Garden's goals. This zealotry can make her reckless, as she is prone to charging into battle against overwhelming odds without a clear strategy.
Within the story, Victoria is introduced during a reconnaissance mission in the Kingdom of Oriana, where she is assigned to work with a squad that includes Rose Oriana, also known as Number 666. The two share the rare distinction of having been directly empowered by Shadow, but Victoria harbors an intense distrust and jealousy towards Rose. She views Rose as weak, unworthy of Shadow's gift, and a potential stain on his legacy. This conflict comes to a head when the squad confronts Queen Reina of Oriana, who is colluding with the cult. When Rose refuses to let Victoria kill her own mother, Victoria immediately brands her a traitor and is prepared to execute her on the spot. This incident solidifies the bitter rivalry between the two, as Victoria sees any deviation from the mission as an unforgivable betrayal of Shadow.
In terms of relationships, her dynamic with Rose is the most prominent, defined by hostility and a clash of ideals. Conversely, she shares a strong bond of understanding with Zeta, one of the original Seven Shadows. Both characters are fanatics in their devotion to Shadow, and Victoria becomes a secret and willing accomplice to Zeta's more radical plans, which involve reviving the demon Diabolos to grant Shadow eternal life, a scheme she supports without hesitation.
Victoria is a formidable combatant whose abilities are said to rival those of the Seven Shadows, the organization's elite leaders. Before her possession, she was already a powerful warrior, serving as the supreme commander of the Templars and demonstrating great skill with a sword. After joining Shadow Garden and receiving Shadow's power, her strength increased even further. She has demonstrated the ability to single-handedly fight over one hundred high-ranking members of the cult, including three executives, for three days before finally succumbing to exhaustion and severe injuries. Her combat style is aggressive and direct, often overwhelming opponents with sheer force and endurance rather than intricate strategy.
