Description
Dr. Antonio Taylor is a supporting character in the 2023 animated film Resident Evil: Death Island. He is a scientist and robotics engineer who worked for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), having previously graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to the events of the film, Taylor sold classified information to foreign entities, an act of treason that made him a wanted man.
In 2015, the San Francisco Police Department attempted to apprehend Taylor, but he was intercepted and kidnapped by a group of armed mercenaries working for the bioterrorist Dylan Blake. Taylor was taken to a secret underground laboratory on Alcatraz Island, where Blake forced him to use his expertise in microrobotics to develop a series of mosquito-like bio-drones. These drones were designed to deliver a modified, non-contagious variant of the T-Virus to single targets, which Blake intended to use in a plot to dismantle human society.
While working on the drones, Taylor secretly created a backdoor code to the drone network in case Blake ever betrayed him, hiding this information in his pen. During his captivity, Blake terrorized Taylor by playing Russian roulette with him, a psychological torture that Blake used to convince them both they were fated for other things.
Taylor managed to escape his captors briefly and hid within the Alcatraz prison complex during a viral outbreak. When found by Claire and Chris Redfield, he initially introduced himself as a tourist named Tony Davis, showing his instinct for self-preservation and deception. He revealed a cynical and confrontational personality, rebuking Claire and her TerraSave organization as terrorists, specifically blaming them for the T-Virus outbreak in Harvardville.
Despite his initial hostility, Taylor began to show vulnerability after being injured and tended to by Claire. His motivations shifted from pure survival to a reluctant cooperation with the protagonists. When Dylan Blake infected Chris, Claire, and Leon with the T-Virus, Blake gave Jill Valentine an ultimatum: save Dr. Taylor by shooting the infected Claire, or let Claire turn and kill Taylor. Taylor begged for his life, but Jill refused to comply. In response, Dylan Blake shot Taylor in the chest, mortally wounding him.
In his final moments, inspired by the heroes' resolve to keep fighting for a flawed world rather than destroying it, Taylor experienced significant character development. He admitted he had lived a selfish life, doing things only for his own benefit, and wondered how he might have been different had he met them sooner. As he died, Taylor gave Claire the backdoor code to control the drone network, a final act of redemption that proved crucial to stopping Blake's plan.
