Description
In A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life, Earth is the in-game avatar of the series' protagonist, a 38-year-old single man named Daichi Tanaka. Outside the virtual world, Daichi works as a factory engineer and leads a busy, ordinary life, which informs his approach to the fantasy game One More Free Life Online. His real-world past includes physical challenges stemming from an accident during his high school years, though these do not define his enthusiastic participation in the game.
Earth is defined by his deliberate and unconventional playstyle. While other players pursue flashy, high-powered skills, Earth deliberately masters abilities that are widely regarded as useless, including Cooking, Woodworking, Crafting Fingers, Distant Vision, Kicking, Potion Making, Wind Magic, Concealment, and Physical Enhancement. This choice is rooted in his motivation as a player: he has only a few hours to play each day and wishes to enjoy the game at his own pace, avoiding the stress and competition that comes with being a hardcore player. He is unfazed by the mockery of others and instead focuses on self-sufficiency, crafting his own bows, armor, potions, and meals, which unexpectedly become highly sought after by the game's community.
In terms of personality, Earth is depicted as calm, resourceful, and quietly competent. His reputation grows organically from his helpfulness; for instance, he solves a town's potion shortage by selling his own brews and wins a duel against a provoking player, solidifying his status as a formidable, if unconventional, adventurer. He is known for his connections with various non-player character races and for solving tricky problems behind the scenes, earning him the informal titles of the First Cook and the Husband of the Fairy Queen.
Regarding his key relationships, Earth initially plans to be a solo player, but his unique skills attract the attention of others. He frequently parties with a group of players that includes Milly, who is well-versed in healing and support magic; Nora, a close-range dagger fighter; and Rona, a skilled fighter. These relationships remain platonic, as Earth treats his companions as fellow players and is focused on the game itself rather than romantic entanglements. A notable relationship is with the Fairy Queen, a powerful non-player character who becomes infatuated with him after losing to him in a tournament. Her interest in Earth is so strong that she gives him a ring that marks him as the Fairy King and even attempts to file a marriage registration, making her the character with the highest chance of being his partner, though no official relationship has been established.
His development throughout the story is less about a traditional hero's journey and more about the unexpected consequences of his playstyle. By sticking to his philosophy of mastering practical, often-overlooked skills, he becomes one of the game's most interesting and effective players, even attracting the attention of the game's staff. His notable abilities lie in his diverse skill set, which includes branches from the Thief class such as Chivalrous Thief and Chivalrous Thief Captain, allowing him to handle problems with a unique blend of crafting, magic, and combat that no specialized player could replicate. He successfully combines abilities like archery, wind magic, and blacksmithing to create his own equipment and resources, demonstrating that a well-rounded approach can be more powerful than specializing in a single, elite skill.
