Description
The character known as @Meow-Meow, originally pronounced as @NyanNyan in Japanese, is one of the main protagonists of Magical Girl Raising Project Restart. Her real name as a human is Himari Tanahashi, a college student who does not appear particularly remarkable or Chinese in her daily life. In stark contrast, her Magical Girl form is vibrant and distinctive, featuring bright red hair tied into pigtails, white buns adorned with pink flower patterns, and light brown eyes. She wears a green, red, gold, and black Chinese dress with puffy sleeves, a green collar fastened with a red ribbon, black flats, and a large brown dragon tail with white spikes. This appearance reflects the somewhat whimsical and themed nature of her magical identity.
The story of @Meow-Meow is deeply rooted in tragedy and loss. In her early days as a Magical Girl, she was young, energetic, and inseparable from her two best friends, with whom she played soccer and fought alongside. Her unusual name was chosen randomly by these friends, who decided that because Himari was a little lazy and cat-like, she should end her name with nyan. This period of happiness came to a devastating end during her official entry exam to become a Magical Girl. The examiner, a ruthless Magical Girl named Cranberry, conducted a deadly selection test in which @Meow-Meow was forced to be the last one standing, resulting in Cranberry killing both of her friends. To cover up the atrocity, Cranberry labeled the deaths a traffic accident and partially wiped @Meow-Meow's memory of the exam. However, the erasure was incomplete. While she lost the specific details of the event, she was left with a persistent, inexplicable sense of dread and a deep, somber sadness whenever something reminded her of her lost friends, such as kicking a soccer ball or hearing laughter.
Haunted by these feelings, @Meow-Meow eventually requested the Magical Kingdom to erase all her memories of being a Magical Girl, leading her to retire. She quietly worked as a delivery girl for the kingdom, using her magical ability to transport items. Her power allows her to seal any non-living object into paper talismans or scrolls, regardless of size, shape, or mass. The sealing and releasing process is instantaneous, and objects do not deteriorate while sealed. A significant limitation is that she only possesses ten scrolls, each capable of sealing a single object, and she must be able to see the entire object to seal it. This ability proves to be incredibly versatile and powerful, allowing her to carry and deploy anything from boulders to entire buildings in an instant.
In Restart, @Meow-Meow is drawn into a new social game, which restores her memories of being a Magical Girl, though the specifics of her friends deaths remain obscured by the game masters tampering. She becomes a core member of Team Daisy, where her personality shines through as fiercely protective, dedicated, and somewhat cautious. Initially bewildered by the gaps in her memory, she is determined to move forward and protect her new companions. Her most significant relationship is with Genopsyko Yumenoshima, with whom she bonds over their unusual names. Their friendship brings warmth and laughter back into @Meow-Meow's life, making her deeply devoted to Genopsyko. Throughout the deadly game, @Meow-Meow demonstrates immense bravery and strength, particularly when she single-handedly kills the Magical Girl Akane to avenge a grave injury to Genopsyko and to protect her teammate Nokko. She does so by crushing Akane with a skyscraper, an act that leaves her in tears, both from the shock of killing and from the vague, unsettling sense that this is not the first time she has taken a life. This moment further destabilizes her mental strength, requiring Nokko to use her calming magic.
The conclusion of @Meow-Meow's development is as tragic as her past. After the battle with Akane, Genopsyko's body disappears, leaving @Meow-Meow distraught but holding onto hope that she is still alive. Later, as the remaining Magical Girls prepare to fight a Great Dragon, @Meow-Meow is overjoyed to see Genopsyko seemingly return, healthy and with her arms open for a hug. Unbeknownst to her, Genopsyko has already died, and her corpse is being manipulated by other Magical Girls. @Meow-Meow embraces her friend, and in a final act of cruelty, the controlled Genopsyko rolls both of them into the Great Dragon's line of fire, where @Meow-Meow is killed instantly. Her death is a direct result of her unwavering loyalty and love for her friend, turning her greatest source of happiness into the instrument of her demise. Even after her death, her legacy impacts the story, as her passing becomes part of the motivation for other survivors to seek justice against the corrupt Magical Kingdom. @Meow-Meow is ultimately a character defined by the lingering trauma of her past, her desperate desire to protect those she cares about in the present, and the heartbreaking inability to escape a fate seemingly sealed from her very first days as a Magical Girl.
