Description
Detec Bell, whose real name is Shinobu Hioka, is a character from the Magical Girl Raising Project Restart storyline. As a human, she works as an assistant at a detective agency, a profession that reflects her lifelong passion for mystery novels and detective work. This passion began in childhood when she was inspired by an anime about a child detective, leading her to read every mystery she could find and eventually become the president of her high school's mystery club. Despite her enthusiasm, the reality of her job as an adult private investigator falls short of her childhood dreams, often involving mundane tasks like searching for runaway pets or investigating marital infidelities rather than solving thrilling crimes.
As a magical girl, Detec Bell is a keen, hardworking, and intelligent individual who makes good use of her abilities to track down information about other magical girls. She has a tendency to be suspicious of others, even those on her own team, as shown when she feels compelled to investigate her teammate Lapis Lazuline to confirm her trustworthiness. This cautious nature, however, is balanced by a strong sense of care for her allies. She believes that despite her teammate Cherna Mouse's difficult personality, Cherna is not a bad person. After Cherna's death, Detec Bell personally carries her body to the grave. Detec Bell is also humble and self-critical, feeling she is not suited to be a leader and believing she has little to offer her team besides her experience. This sense of being an outsider or feeling left out persists even as she tries her best to contribute to the group's survival.
Her unique magical ability allows her to talk to buildings. By kissing a building, she can give it a face and a distinct personality, after which it will answer her questions. The building is always friendly to her, but it will never reveal information that could be disadvantageous to its owner or inhabitants. This power, while useful for investigation in the real world, proves to have significant limitations within the deadly game of Restart, as the game-created buildings will not divulge secrets about the game itself. Recognizing this, Detec Bell finds more practical uses for her magic, such as having buildings hide objects for her.
Within the story of Restart, Detec Bell is the nominal leader of Team Bell, a group that includes Lapis Lazuline, Cherna Mouse, and Melville. Her role is largely that of an investigator and the moral center of her team. She is the one who uses her skills to confirm the death of Magical Daisy, a critical piece of information about the game's deadly stakes. Her relationship with Lapis Lazuline is the most significant. Although she initially doubts Lazuline, she meets her in the real world and comes to trust her completely, even entrusting her with her final secret. The two share a warm bond, with Lazuline even expressing a desire to become Detec Bell's apprentice. In contrast, her relationship with Melville is fraught with tension, as Melville does not trust Detec Bell and eventually becomes her killer.
Detec Bell's development is marked by her growing resolve and her transition from a reluctant leader to a decisive actor. Pushed by her feelings of inadequacy and the team's dysfunction, she takes the proactive step of investigating Lazuline in the real world, which solidifies their friendship. In her final moments, she undergoes a crucial transformation. After purchasing the Memory Restoration Device, a key item that could expose the traitor in the game, she is attacked from behind by Melville. Mortally wounded, she does not despair. Instead, she uses her magic on the floor, creating a face, and hides her smartphone inside its mouth, giving final instructions for it to be given only to Lapis Lazuline. This act of self-sacrifice ensures that the device and her phone are recovered, ultimately unmasking Melville as the murderer.
Her notable abilities extend beyond her magic. Detec Bell possesses sharp analytical and deductive skills, which she applies to her investigations. Stated statistics rate her physical ability as low, but her mental strength, communication skills, insight, and magical experience are all average. She also carries a magnifying glass as her trademark item. Off the battlefield, she has personal likes including all detective fiction, writing in a narrative style, and eating barbecue, while she dislikes dirty walls, working unpaid overtime, and ripe tomatoes. After her death, her fate has a lasting impact, as the surviving magical girls, particularly Pfle, visit her grave and are inspired by the tragedy of Restart to work toward changing the corrupt Magical Kingdom.
