Description
Mars, formally known as Marmarugias Gisaras, is the second prince of the Gisaras Empire. He is a bastard child of the emperor and is often looked down upon by the court for his overly kind and gentle nature, which is regarded as a weakness in his merit-based homeland. Originally, he was destined to marry Princess Hime and become the Ring King, a position that would allow the empire to control the power of the rings. However, his intended role is usurped when Haruto Satou follows Hime into her world and inadvertently becomes the Ring King during her wedding ceremony.
Despite this turn of events, Marse harbors no ill will toward Satou. He is genuinely relieved to be free of the duty, as his true affections lie elsewhere. He is in love with Princess Saphira of Maasa and had hoped to marry her when his position as Ring King would have permitted it. After losing his chance at the ring and facing Saphira’s initial disappointment, Marse falls into a period of self-doubt and worthlessness. This vulnerability is exploited by the Oracle, who curses him with a sword that can deflect the Ring King’s power, leading him to attack Satou. During their duel, Satou recognizes that Marse is hesitating and, rather than striking him down, offers him a new purpose: to serve as a knight of the Ring King. By breaking the cursed gem on Marse’s sword, Satou frees him from the Oracle’s influence.
Accepting his new worth, Marse resolves to protect those precious to him. He proposes to Saphira in the middle of the battle, using the moment as a distraction to help rescue her from captivity. His proposal is accepted, and the emperor later blesses their union. Marse’s personal growth centers on moving from being regarded as a failure to finding value as a loyal knight and devoted husband.
In terms of abilities, Marse is a highly skilled swordsman and a capable strategist. He leads conventional military forces against the Abyss King’s minions and serves as a reliable combatant alongside Satou. His role in the story is that of a steadfast ally and a foil to Satou—a traditional noble hero who must forge his own path after being passed over for the chosen one’s destiny. He maintains a respectful rivalry with Satou and eventually becomes a close friend. His key relationships include his romantic bond with Saphira, his complicated family ties with his brother Sluder and his father the emperor, and his supportive yet initially awkward connection with Hime, whom he was almost set to marry.
