TV-Series
Description
Aki Mizuguchi is a supporting character who serves as the bassist for the band SSGIRLS. She is a third-year high school student and the older sister of Miki Mizuguchi. Physically, she is recognized by her medium-length hair and a distinctive mole located under her left eye. She has a birthday on April 12th.
In terms of personality, Aki presents a peppy, energetic, and direct demeanor. She maintains a carefree and optimistic attitude, often acting as a positive force who keeps her bandmates in a good mindset and enjoys teasing them. She is decisive and known for making unexpected moves. However, beneath this lively exterior, she harbors deeper insecurities. Aki is quite self-conscious about her past and relationships, and she desperately fears losing people close to her. She has a tendency to bottle up these painful feelings, only opening up about them when specifically asked. Her actions are consistently driven by a deep care for her friends, even when it requires personal sacrifice.
Aki's primary role in the story is as the steadfast best friend of the protagonist, Yori Asanagi. The two share a very close bond, and Aki is one of the first people to encourage Yori to pursue a romantic relationship with Himari Kino. This support is particularly significant because Aki herself developed romantic feelings for Yori after they became friends. Despite wanting to take an "extra step" with Yori, Aki chose never to confess her feelings, prioritizing the preservation of their existing friendship over the risk of losing it. Later, upon realizing that Yori has genuine feelings for Himari and that Himari returns them, Aki decides to silently step aside, burying her own emotions to support the happiness of her best friend.
Another critical and complex relationship is the one Aki has with Shiho Izumi. Their connection is fraught with tension, hostility, and a sense of competitiveness that masks deep, unresolved history. Aki first befriended Shiho during their first year of high school after discovering her crying over a falling out with other bandmates. Aki suggested they form a band, leading to the creation of SSGIRLS. Despite frequently arguing over musical tastes, Aki loved playing with Shiho and considered her a best friend. Unbeknownst to Aki, Shiho fell in love with her. The relationship fractured when Shiho saw Aki blushing over Yori and, later, a heated argument about the band's future led to a physical confrontation and Shiho quitting the group. For a long time, Aki was left hurt and confused, unable to accept that the Shiho she knew had supposedly hated playing with them. This conflict drives a significant portion of Aki's character development.
Aki also has a quietly amusing and secretive connection to Himari Kino. She has known Himari for some time but deliberately hides this fact from Yori, simply because she finds the situation amusing. This secret connection adds a layer of playful mischief to her otherwise emotionally heavy journey.
Throughout the narrative, Aki undergoes notable development. Initially defined by her unrequited love for Yori and the bottled-up pain from her falling out with Shiho, she learns to confront these issues directly. After confirming that her romantic feelings for Yori have faded, she takes a significant step by altering her band's setlist to perform a song that Shiho loved, an act meant to reach out and bridge the gap between them. In a pivotal moment, she publicly accepts Shiho's past feelings and asks for a chance to be together again, not necessarily as lovers but as people who can move forward without regret. This leads to a reconciliation and a new chapter in their relationship, with Aki eventually asking Shiho out on a real date.
As the bassist for SSGIRLS, Aki's notable ability is her musical talent. She is a skilled enough musician to be a core member of the band and is comfortable on stage, even delivering heartfelt monologues directly to specific people in the audience during performances. Her strength, however, lies more in her emotional resilience and her capacity to orchestrate difficult confrontations in order to heal fractured bonds.
