Description
Terakomari Gandesblood, often called Komari, is the fifteen-year-old protagonist of The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess. She is a vampire from the noble Gandesblood family, but she has spent the last three years of her life as a shut-in recluse. This seclusion stemmed from her inability to meet the expectations of her prestigious lineage: she hates drinking blood, which prevents her from using magic and has caused her physical growth to remain stunted. Consequently, she is physically weak, uncoordinated, and inept at sorcery compared to other vampires. Her life changes abruptly when a misunderstanding with her father leads to her being appointed as one of the Seven Crimson Lords, the empire’s most formidable military commanders. Though terrified by this sudden responsibility, Komari must bluff her way through leading the notorious Seventh Unit, a corps infamous for overthrowing and murdering its superiors.
She initially wishes only to survive and maintain her ruse, but over time she begins to take genuine ownership of her role and protect those around her. Her personality is a blend of anxiety and stubborn resilience; she is often overwhelmed by her duties but uses clever deception to project an image of a ruthless warlord. Her hatred of blood and her desire to live a quiet, peaceful life remain core motivations even as she is thrust into imperial politics and warfare.
Komari’s key relationship is with Villhaze, her devoted maid, who assists her in maintaining the illusion of strength and develops a deep, often unreciprocated affection for her. Other important figures include fellow Crimson Lord Karen Helvetius, her sister Yurin, and her father Arman. A vampire from her past emerges as a persistent threat, forcing her to confront her own weaknesses. Over the course of the story, Komari grows from a helpless shut-in into a more confident and capable leader, though she never fully abandons her nervous disposition. Her main limitation remains her inability to drink blood, which leaves her without conventional vampire powers; she relies instead on her wits, the assistance of allies, and sheer luck to overcome her challenges.
