Description
Johan Helders is a character from the anime The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess, serving as a young vampire with striking blond hair who holds the position of squad leader of the Fourth Unit, a special assault team within the Seventh Battalion. His rank is that of a lieutenant, and he is known for his mastery of fire magic, which makes him a formidable combatant.

In terms of personality, Johan initially presents as resentful and confrontational, particularly towards the protagonist, Terakomari Gandesblood. He firmly believes that she obtained her high-ranking position as one of the Seven Scarlet Stars through connections and nepotism rather than through any genuine skill or merit. This resentment fuels his early hostility and a desire to prove her unworthiness. However, he is not a static character. Johan possesses the capacity for deep introspection, and following the events surrounding Millicent Bluenight, he undergoes a significant transformation. He evolves into a far more understanding, compassionate, and loyal individual. He speaks of himself using the pronoun I in a gentle manner, which hints at a softer, more earnest nature beneath his initial outward hostility. He becomes easily flustered, especially when other characters, such as Nelia Cunningham, tease him about his apparent feelings for Terakomari, suggesting a shy and awkward side to his personality.

Johan's primary motivation shifts dramatically over the course of the story. Initially driven by a grudge against Terakomari, his experiences lead him to regret his earlier betrayal and seek redemption. After being shown unexpected kindness by Komari following his own treacherous actions, his goal becomes to support her and protect her secret. While he becomes aware that Komari is weak in her everyday life and lacks typical vampiric strength, he resolves to hide this fact from the rest of their unit and serve as her discreet and most loyal ally. Ironically, despite this loyalty, he remains completely oblivious to her hidden and overwhelmingly powerful alter ego, the Crimson Promise, as he has a habit of dying at every crucial moment before it can be revealed, even after serving alongside her for over a year.

Johan's role in the story is that of a rival turned trusted subordinate. He leads the Fourth Unit directly under Terakomari's command. His journey begins with open hostility, culminating in him challenging Komari to a duel, which he loses due to the interference of her devoted servant, Villhaze. Humiliated and resentful, he allies himself with the antagonist Millicent Bluenight, helping her in a conspiracy to install a teleportation device in the palace to harm Komari. However, during this plot, he witnesses Millicent's cruelty, particularly when she uses a sacred weapon to injure Villhaze. Horrified by this act, Johan turns against Millicent, even allowing himself to be stabbed in the process. As he lies gravely wounded, he urges Komari to flee, but she chooses to help him despite his betrayal. Immediately after this moment of compassion, Johan is killed in a magical explosion. Once the incident is resolved, he admits his faults, reaffirms his loyalty, and is reintegrated into the unit.

His key relationships center on his commander, Terakomari Gandesblood, transforming from bitter enmity to unwavering support. He also has a complicated and short-lived alliance with Millicent Bluenight, which ends in betrayal and violence. He frequently interacts with his fellow squad members, such as Nelia Cunningham, who enjoys pointing out his obvious, though unacknowledged, affection for Komari. He also shows care for Villhaze, whom he refuses to see cruelly harmed.

Throughout this development, Johan is distinguished by a few notable abilities. Beyond his proficiency with flame magic, he possesses a unique and almost comical trait: an extraordinarily high frequency of death and subsequent resurrection. While coming back to life is a known phenomenon in his world, Johan experiences it to a remarkable degree, leading Terakomari to nickname him the vampire beloved by death. His first death was particularly accidental; during an early, aggressive confrontation with Komari, she reflexively slammed a door, catching his neck in it and killing him without any magic or special power being used. Despite his courage and willingness to risk everything for his comrades, he is tragically prone to being killed at inopportune moments. After being revived, he returns with greater respect for Komari and continues his role as comedic relief and a source of emotional grounding for the Special Assault Squad, often trying to support Komari in small ways, such as offering to warm her with his fire magic or teaching her to swim, only to have his efforts interrupted by the chaotic jealousy of other members.
