Description
Guel Jeturk is a central character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is introduced as the heir to the Jeturk Heavy Machinery company, one of the three largest corporations within the powerful Benerit Group, and a third-year student in the piloting department at the Asticassia School of Technology.
Physically, Guel is a tall young man with tanned skin and a distinctive mark below his right eye. He typically has long hair with a pink streak in his bangs, which he ties back when piloting a mobile suit. Later in the story, after experiencing significant trauma, he cuts his hair to a much shorter style.
At the beginning of the series, Guel's personality is defined by arrogance and a hot-headed temperament. As the ace pilot of Jeturk House, he holds the title of Holder, the school's top duelist, which also makes him the fiancé of Miorine Rembran. He views this engagement not as a genuine relationship but as a trophy that proves his strength, and he treats Miorine with a dismissive and even physically aggressive attitude. His pride is deeply tied to his status and his desire to win the approval of his father, Vim Jeturk, the company's CEO. Guel's family background is troubled; his mother left him and his younger half-brother, Lauda Neill, after she discovered Vim's infidelity. This abandonment led Guel to resent his mother and become intensely focused on earning his father's recognition.
Guel's motivations evolve drastically over the course of the story. Initially, he is driven by a desire to maintain his honor and standing as the school's best pilot, following his father's orders without question. His world is shattered when he is easily defeated in a duel by the transfer student, Suletta Mercury, losing his title, his fiancée, and his father's respect in a single stroke. He becomes obsessed with challenging Suletta again to reclaim his pride, even impulsively proposing marriage to her after she defeats him a second time, a request she immediately rejects.
His pride leads to a series of humiliations, culminating in his father disowning him and forcing him to leave the school. Penniless and disgraced, Guel goes into hiding, taking a job with a transport company under the alias Bob. This period of exile is a crucial turning point. A terrorist attack on a space facility by the Earthian group Dawn of Fold forces him to fight for his life, and in a moment of fear and desperation, he fatally strikes the cockpit of an attacking mobile suit, only to discover he has killed his own father. This tragic accident plunges Guel into profound guilt and trauma. He is taken hostage to Earth, where he witnesses the horrors of conflict firsthand, solidifying his resolve to take responsibility for his family's company and atone for his past mistakes.
Following these events, Guel returns to space and assumes the role of CEO of Jeturk Heavy Machinery. His personality transforms from a brash bully into a more serious, melancholic, and responsible leader who seeks to reform his company and despises unnecessary violence. While still impulsive at times, he becomes a staunchly pacifist figure, using force only as a last resort and making conscious efforts to incapacitate rather than kill his opponents. He reconciles with his brother Lauda and works alongside Miorine and other former rivals to stop the larger threats facing the Benerit Group.
Guel's key relationships are central to his development. His rivalry with Suletta Mercury evolves from antagonism to a deep respect and an unrequited romantic interest. He apologizes to Miorine for his past behavior and later becomes one of her most reliable allies and supporters. His relationship with his father is a tragic one of seeking approval that ends in accidental patricide, while his bond with his devoted younger brother Lauda is strained by secrets and guilt but ultimately repaired.
In terms of abilities, Guel is an exceptionally skilled mobile suit pilot, specializing in close-quarters combat. Despite his early defeats, he is recognized as one of the strongest duelists in the school, with an official record showing 28 wins before his losses to Suletta. He demonstrates remarkable strategic thinking and combat sense, capable of holding his own against powerful enemies even while suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. His personal mobile suits include the red-violet Dilanza and, most notably, the Darilbalde, a fifth-generation test machine equipped with an experimental AI that can assist or even automate combat, though Guel often prefers to rely on his own instincts and skill. By the end of the series, he has grown from a prideful heir into a capable leader and a pilot of formidable resolve.
