Description
Guston Parche is a supporting character from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, introduced as a seemingly unremarkable transport worker who is later revealed to be an agent of the Space Assembly League. Operating undercover alongside his superior, Feng Jun, Guston works as a helmsman, a role in which he possesses superb technical skill and reliability. He is a man of imposing physical stature, with a muscular build and distinctive dreadlocks, which gives him the appearance of a tough, blue-collar laborer. Despite his formidable size, Guston is characterized by a reserved and silent demeanor, often speaking only when necessary and letting his actions do the talking for him.

Guston's personality is defined by a deep sense of loyalty and a strong moral compass. He is completely dedicated to his mission and his partnership with Feng Jun, with whom he shares such a profound level of trust and non-verbal communication that they can coordinate seamlessly without exchanging words. While he is decisive and sometimes resorts to using his physical strength to block or restrain someone to achieve his objectives, this contrasts sharply with the more persuasive and diplomatic approach favored by Feng Jun. Beneath his gruff and silent exterior, Guston carries a significant emotional burden. He explicitly dislikes the difficult decisions that come with being an adult, expressing deep discomfort and guilt over the necessity of involving young people like Suletta Mercury in dangerous, life-threatening conflicts. He is fundamentally a protector at heart, preferring to shield the younger generation rather than see them placed on the front lines, and he feels a strong sense of responsibility for their safety.

Guston's motivations evolve from simply following the orders of the Space Assembly League to a more personal mission driven by conscience. Initially, he and Feng Jun perform standard intelligence work, such as observing the aftermath of the Plant Quetta incident and tracking down the fugitive engineer Belmeria Winston. After Feng Jun is mortally wounded while protecting him and Belmeria from a Shin Sei Development Corporation attack, Guston takes charge of the mission to stop Prospera Mercury's "Quiet Zero" plan. He seeks out Suletta Mercury at the Asticassia School of Technology, first asking her to reason with her mother. When he learns this is impossible, he makes a pivotal and conflicted decision: he provides Suletta with the Gundam Calibarn, a dangerously powerful and restricted mobile suit confiscated by the Assembly League, and asks her to pilot it to stop Quiet Zero. He does this not as a cold agent, but as a desperate adult seeing it as the only remaining option, a choice he clearly finds abhorrent but necessary.

His key relationships greatly define his role. His partnership with Feng Jun is the most significant, as her faith in him and her final sacrifice directly drive his actions for the rest of the series. With Belmeria Winston, he forms an unlikely alliance, protecting her after Feng Jun's death and working together to expose the truth about Quiet Zero. With Suletta Mercury, he acts as a reluctant benefactor, placing an immense burden on her shoulders but also respecting her agency and supporting her decision to fight. During the final battle, he, along with Delling Rembran and Rajan Zahi, attempts to stop the Space Assembly League's attack fleet from firing on Suletta and her companions, demonstrating his commitment to protecting the students he involved.

Throughout the series, Guston undergoes notable development from a background operative into an active moral actor. He starts as a silent agent taking orders but ends as a man making autonomous, difficult choices to prevent a catastrophe. His internal conflict is a central part of his arc; he is haunted by the hypocrisy of asking a child to pilot a weapon of mass destruction, an act he acknowledges makes him no better than the corrupt systems he serves, yet he proceeds with it as a last resort. His development is complete in the epilogue, set three years after the final battle, where he is seen visiting Feng Jun's grave on Earth with Belmeria, finally at peace after fulfilling his mission and honoring his fallen partner. Guston Parche's notable abilities include exceptional piloting and helmsmanship, physical strength, and a tactical mind, but his most defining characteristic is his enduring loyalty and his struggle to be a responsible adult in a world that frequently forces him to put children in harm's way.
