Description
Hertrude Sera Fanoss is the First Princess and a co-leader of the Principality of Fanoss, a breakaway duchy that seceded from the Kingdom of Holfort in the years before the story begins. As a key figure from a rival nation, she initially serves as a primary antagonist. Her position is inherited, but she is later revealed to have been largely a figurehead, unknowingly manipulated by the nation's War Hawk faction, who were responsible for the deaths of her parents to advance their own agenda.
Hertrude possesses a personality that is layered and often contradictory. She can be cynical, paranoid, and highly calculating, but also displays moments of clumsiness and deep care for those she loves. She presents a composed and imposing facade as a leader, which stems from her sheltered upbringing within the royal court. Underneath, she is a young woman desperate to protect her nation and family, leading her to make desperate and often manipulative attempts to secure powerful allies. She is notably open with the protagonist, Leon Fou Bartfort, showing her true feelings of frustration and loneliness in their interactions, which differ greatly from her formal demeanor with others.
Her primary motivation is the survival and prosperity of the Principality of Fanoss against the much larger Kingdom of Holfort. Driven by a deep-seated hatred for the kingdom, which she believes has long been the aggressor, she is willing to employ underhanded tactics to achieve her goals, such as sowing political discord and framing Leon as a spy to get him imprisoned. However, her deepest personal motivation is the protection of her younger sister, Hertrauda Sera Fanoss, for whom she harbors a powerful and genuine love.
In the story, Hertrude first appears leading a surprise attack against the Kingdom, using an ancient artifact known as a Magic Flute to summon and control an army of monsters. She holds a ship of noble students hostage but is defeated and captured by Leon. Following her capture, she is forced to become a foreign exchange student at the Holfort academy as part of a political arrangement. From this position, she continues her schemes, working secretly with a faction of Holfort nobles to destabilize the kingdom from within, leading to a second invasion. It is during the climax of this second war that she learns her parents were murdered by her own nation's war party, who had been using her and her sister as pawns. This revelation pushes her past her Despair Event Horizon, causing her to lose control and attack both the Kingdom and the Principality.
Her key relationships define much of her journey. Her bond with her sister Hertrauda is her strongest emotional tether, and her death is a devastating blow that contributes to her breakdown. Her relationship with Leon Fou Bartford is complex; she initially hates him for defeating her, but quickly recognizes his immense value as a potential ally. She makes numerous, almost desperate, offers for him to join her side ("We Can Rule Together"), a desire that may grow into a form of personal attachment or regret. After her defeat, she regrets not having convinced him to help her. She is also manipulated by the treacherous Marquess Frampton of Holfort, with whom she conspires before ultimately betraying him when it suits her purposes. In later volumes, she receives a pivotal moment of understanding from Marie Fou Lafan, who stands up for her and convinces her she is not alone, leading to a ceasefire.
Hertrude undergoes significant development throughout the series. She begins as a confident, revenge-bent princess leading a powerful invasion. After her capture, she becomes a political schemer and prisoner, her confidence shaken but her resolve hardened. Her world is shattered upon learning she was a puppet and witnessing her sister's death, leading her to a state of complete despair and blind rage. Later, after the war's end, she evolves into the acting head of the House of Fanoss, now a duchy under the Kingdom's strict supervision. In this role, she becomes more mature, level-headed, and pragmatic, focusing on her people's internal development while still being a shrewd political negotiator. In volumes set after the main conflict, she is willing to assist former enemies like Leon and Olivia when their goals align, demonstrating a significant heel-face turn.
Hertrude's most notable ability is her use of an ancient artifact Magic Flute. By playing this flute, she can create, summon, and control programmed monsters. This powerful magical technology is the primary reason the smaller Principality of Fanoss is able to militarily challenge the larger Kingdom of Holfort. She is shown to be capable of summoning super-large monsters at the height of her power.
