Description
As Nödt is a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter, an elite force of Quincies serving the emperor Yhwach in the final arc of the story. He is designated with the letter F, which stands for Fear, reflecting the core nature of his power and personality. His appearance is striking and unsettling. He is tall and gaunt, with long black hair parted down the middle and deep, dark eyes. The lower half of his face is obscured by a black mask adorned with multiple spikes. When this mask is removed, his true face is revealed to be a horrifying sight, lacking lips and eyebrows, with his teeth and gums fully exposed, a direct consequence of his past.

The background of As Nödt is deeply tragic and explains his fixation on fear. Before becoming a Quincy, he was a terminally ill man confined to a hospital bed. He was deeply religious and lived in constant terror of dying and going to hell. He was one of the few who survived a previous selection, or Auswählen, by Yhwach. The emperor visited the dying man personally and bestowed upon him a portion of his power, granting him a new, healthy body and a place among the Sternritter. However, this salvation came at a cost, warping his physical form into its current grotesque state and cementing his absolute loyalty to Yhwach.

As Nödt is a quiet and stoic individual, often appearing expressionless and detached. However, this calm demeanor masks a cruel and sadistic nature that emerges during battle. He has a dark, twisted sense of humor, making morbid jokes about the injuries he inflicts on his opponents. His entire philosophy is built around the concept of primal, instinctual fear. He believes that fear born from reason can be understood and overcome through experience and willpower. True fear, the kind he wields, is without reason or logic. It is an inescapable instinct that crawls under the skin like insects, and it is this form of terror he seeks to inflict on all who oppose him. The only thing he himself claims to fear is incurring the wrath of his sovereign, Yhwach, and being destroyed by him.

In the story, As Nödt serves as a major antagonist during the first invasion of the Soul Society. He confronts Captain Byakuya Kuchiki of the Sixth Division, quickly overpowering him. He demonstrates the primary weapon of the Sternritter by using a medallion to steal Byakuya's Bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. He then uses his own fear-inducing thorns to paralyze Byakuya with irrational terror before finishing the assault with the stolen Bankai, leaving the captain near death.

During the second invasion, As Nödt confronts Byakuya's younger sister, Rukia Kuchiki. He is driven by a desire to settle the score with Byakuya and attempts to use Rukia as bait to draw him out. In this fight, he is forced to reveal the full extent of his power. After Rukia proves resistant to his basic fear thorns by lowering her body temperature to a deathlike state, he activates his Vollständig, a Quincy's ultimate form, called Tatar Foras, or Fear of God. In this form, his ability evolves from requiring physical contact to inflicting fear through sight alone; anyone who looks at him or the massive eyeballs he creates is overwhelmed by paralyzing terror. When Byakuya arrives and effortlessly destroys his eyes with his Shikai, As Nödt is enraged and transforms into a second, even more grotesque and colossal form. Despite this, Byakuya steps aside, declaring that it is Rukia who will finish the fight. As Nödt is ultimately defeated and killed when Rukia uses her own Bankai, Hakka no Togame, which freezes him solid, causing him to shatter into pieces.

His key relationships are with the two Kuchiki siblings. He views Byakuya as a worthy opponent whose willpower he respects but also seeks to psychologically torment and break. His final moments are defined by an ironic twist, realizing that his own lifelong terror of hell and death was the very inescapable, primal fear he had sought to weaponize against others.

As Nödt possesses a range of notable abilities as a high-ranking Quincy. He can use standard techniques like Blut Vene for immense defensive strength and Hirenkyaku for high-speed movement. His primary power, The Fear, manifests as reishi thorns that bypass conventional defenses. A single scratch from these thorns forces the victim to relive their deepest fears, leading to madness and death from sheer terror. He also successfully wielded the stolen Senbonzakura Kageyoshi against its original owner. His Vollständig, Tatar Foras, is his most terrifying ability, creating a field of giant eyes that lock onto a target and force them to experience overwhelming, all-consuming fear from which there is no escape.
