TV-Series
Description
Giselle Gewelle is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreichs Sternritter, bearing the designation Z, which grants her the Schrift known as The Zombie. She is a young woman with long black hair that carries a subtle dark blue tint, featuring two distinctive strands that stick out from the sides like antennae. Her eyes are also dark blue, and she typically wears a variation of the standard Sternritter uniform, which includes a long white trench coat or pullover, black tights, and white boots.

Possessing a deceptively cheerful and goofy demeanor, Giselle often wears a smile that masks her profoundly sinister and manipulative nature. She appears to enjoy provoking others and rarely takes matters seriously, yet this flippant exterior conceals a ruthless and cruel interior. Despite her actions, which include orchestrating the deaths of both enemies and allies, she has been known to claim she is not a sadist.

Giselles primary motivation appears to be self-preservation and amusement, with little loyalty to anyone beyond her own desires. She is completely unburdened by moral qualms, as evidenced by her willingness to kill her own comrades without hesitation to add them to her army of the walking dead. Her role in the story is that of a dangerous and unpredictable antagonist. She is first seen alongside other female Sternritter, including Bambietta Basterbine, Candice Catnipp, Meninas McAllon, and Liltotto Lamperd, after a gathering where Uryu Ishida is named Yhwachs successor. Following the defeat of Bambietta, this group confronts Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, during which Giselle uses her abilities to force several Shinigami of the 11th Division to commit suicide. She and her group later attack Ichigo Kurosaki upon his arrival on the battlefield, demonstrating their coordinated but ultimately unsuccessful assault.

Giselles most significant relationship is with her fellow Sternritter, particularly Bambietta Basterbine. While they are initially allies, Giselle ultimately kills a weakened Bambietta to transform her into a zombie, retaining her as a weapon and making comments that she finds the memory of the killing exciting. This act underscores the cynical and brutal dynamic within her group, where bonds are fleeting and utility is paramount. She also has an antagonistic relationship with Candice Catnipp, whom she enjoys teasing and provoking. Her encounter with the Shinigami Yumichika Ayasegawa is notable for his statement that he identifies her as a man by her smell, a localization point that has led to ongoing discussion regarding her gender identity. Information from the series author has confirmed that Giselle is a man, which aligns with this portrayal.

Regarding development, Giselle shows little to no change or growth throughout the story. She remains consistently cruel and manipulative, defined entirely by her horrific powers and twisted personality rather than any personal journey or redemption.

Giselles defining ability is The Zombie, which allows her to control anyone splashed with her blood. She exploits this by baiting opponents into cutting her, ensuring her blood sprays onto them. Once under her control, a victim becomes a corpse that obeys her every command, even to the point of killing themselves. The amount of blood required to establish control depends on the targets Reiatsu; a single drop may suffice for a weaker individual, while those with high spiritual pressure require her blood to be introduced directly into their heart, which often results in their skin taking on a reddish hue. A critical limitation of this ability is that it does not work on living Quincies, meaning she must kill her fellow Sternritter before she can zombify them. Conversely, she can use The Zombie to heal, reattaching limbs or restoring injuries by using the flesh of the deceased to replace damaged tissue, effectively making her and her zombies highly resilient. Giselle herself claims to possess almost no hand-to-hand combat skills, but her ability to withstand otherwise lethal wounds and continue fighting without issue makes this weakness difficult to exploit. When she activates her Quincy: Vollstandig, named Azhalbiora, she generates cartoonish skeletal figures or skull-like constructs to attack her opponents, a power that reflects her incongruously playful yet macabre personality.
