Description
Madara, who is also called Nyanko-Sensei, is a major character in the Natsume Yūjin-Chō Roku series. His true form is that of a high-level flying white wolf daiyokai, a powerful spirit known as an inugami. For most of his appearances, he takes the form of a maneki-neko, a beckoning cat figurine, which allows him to be visible to humans. This appearance is a result of being confined in a material form for an extended period after being sealed in a shrine. He was accidentally released from his seal by Takashi Natsume, who later gave him the nickname Nyanko-Sensei, meaning Master Kitty-Cat. In this cat-like shape, Natsume presents him as a pet to his guardians.

Nyanko-Sensei possesses a brash, proud, and greedy personality. He frequently complains, indulges in food and drink, and acts in a self-serving manner. Despite these outward traits, he is fiercely protective of Natsume. His original motivation for staying close to Natsume is to claim the Book of Friends, a ledger of spirit names inherited from Natsume's grandmother Reiko, after Natsume dies. He made a pact to serve as Natsume's self-proclaimed bodyguard and occasional spiritual advisor in exchange for this future reward. Over time, however, his attachment to Natsume deepens into a genuine bond, though he often denies this emotional connection and continues to assert his mercenary intentions.

In the story, Nyanko-Sensei acts as Natsume's primary guardian against the many spirits and exorcists who covet the Book of Friends or wish to harm Natsume for his spiritual powers. He escorts Natsume on his journeys to return the names to their original owners and shares his knowledge of the supernatural world. While he teaches Natsume spells and techniques, their relationship is marked by frequent bickering and comedic physical altercations, where Natsume has been known to knock him unconscious with a punch. Despite his protests about not being a cat, he displays cat-like behaviors, such as playing with toys and napping in sunny spots.

His key relationships include his complicated partnership with Natsume, which evolves from a transactional agreement to a mutual, if unspoken, loyalty. He also knew Natsume's grandmother Reiko, which gives him a personal history with the book and insight into her past. Over the course of the series, including the sixth season, Nyanko-Sensei shows gradual development, becoming more willing to put himself at risk for Natsume and his friends, and occasionally revealing a softer, more caring side beneath his gruff exterior.

His notable abilities include immense physical strength and magical power in his true form, flight, and the capacity to cast protective barriers and offensive spells. In his cat form, his power is somewhat reduced, but he remains a formidable presence capable of intimidating and defeating most spirits he encounters. He also has a keen sense for detecting other yokai and spiritual disturbances.
