Description
The character known as Cecie, who is also referred to as Durga Angel, makes a brief but significant appearance in the anime Gravity Rush: The Animation - Overture. Her role in the short film serves as a direct lead-in to the events of the main video game narrative. Cecie first came to the Banga Settlement, a shantytown built from scraps of wrecked ships, after emerging from a powerful gravity storm that stripped her of nearly all her memories of the past. The settlement's leader, a woman named Lisa, found her and took her in as an adoptive daughter, giving her the name Cecie. During the events of Overture, she has not yet awakened the powers connected to her past life; the film depicts her as an ordinary, if somewhat mysterious, girl in her early teens working as a livestock herder in the settlement.

Cecie is defined by her profoundly reserved, timid, and quiet disposition. She is prone to stammering and displays a general difficulty in expressing herself openly. Her defining motivation is a deep-seated desire to please others, particularly her strict adoptive mother, Lisa. Despite frequently being on the receiving end of Lisa's stern teachings, Cecie remains unquestioningly loyal and tries her utmost to avoid disappointing her. Her shyness extends to most social interactions, but she internally craves a sense of purpose and strength. She holds a great deal of admiration for those who display confidence and a positive outlook, viewing them as role models. Underneath her fragile exterior, she is also a caring individual, capable of showing great tenderness to those in need.

Within the narrative of the Overture, Cecie's primary role is to act as a point of connection for the main protagonist, Kat. She makes her appearance in a post-credits scene, where she is shown to have come into possession of Kat's mysterious, cat-like companion, Dusty. This moment directly sets up the beginning of Gravity Rush 2, as it reveals how Kat was separated from her partner and where her quest to be reunited with him begins. Cecie's relationship with Kat, though largely unexplored in the short film itself, is established as one of deep admiration, as she looks up to the heroine's strong will and optimism. Her most important relationship is with Lisa, whose harsh but well-intentioned guidance shapes much of Cecie's everyday life and her desire to prove herself. She also has a separate identity as Durga Angel, which is the form she was forced into by a scientist named Dr. Brahman as part of an experiment to create superpowered beings. In this state, she was known to be fiercely protective of her younger sister, Kali Angel. While she does not transform in Overture, this past life and her latent abilities are central to her character arc.

Starting from a shy and clumsy herder, Cecie undergoes a gradual but significant transformation into a braver and more self-possessed individual. Inspired by Kat's heroism, she slowly learns to take initiative and become more vocal about her feelings. Her ultimate development is the mastery of her alternate persona, Durga Angel, learning to transform at will to fight as a powerful ally rather than a mindless threat. In her Durga Angel state, Cecie possesses remarkable abilities centered on the manipulation and generation of crystals. She can create countless masses of these crystals to form barriers capable of withstanding immense force, project them as long-range projectiles, and shape them into platforms or even large blades for use in combat. In this angelic form, she also grows wings on her back that grant her the power of flight.
