Description
Cientista, known in the original Japanese version as Gakusha, is a member of the group of mice led by the protagonist Gamba in the 1975 anime series The Adventures of Gamba. He is a close friend and one of the childhood companions of Yoisho, the captain of a crew of sailor mice. True to his name, which translates to "Scholar," Cientista is characterized by his sharp intellect and cleverness, often serving as the brains of the operation. His appearance is distinguished by a pair of large glasses, which visually reinforce his role as the group's knowledgeable and analytical member. Another notable physical trait is his short tail, which sets him apart from other mice.
Personality-wise, Cientista is depicted as knowledgeable and resourceful, using his wits to help the group navigate the various challenges they face on their journey. He does not possess the same brash courage as Gamba or the seasoned strength of Yoisho, but his value lies in his capacity for logical thinking and problem-solving. His motivations are closely tied to the group's central mission. When the young mouse Chuuta arrives in the town seeking help to defeat the tyrannical white weasel Noroi, Cientista, along with his friends, chooses to join the dangerous adventure to Noroi Island. His role in the story is primarily that of a strategic supporter, providing insights and ideas that contribute to the team's efforts against Noroi and other obstacles.
In terms of key relationships, his bond with Yoisho is particularly significant, as they share a history long before the events of the series, having grown up together. He is also an integral part of Gamba's diverse team, which includes other distinct personalities such as the poet Shijin, the swindler Ikasama (known as Trapaceiro in some versions), and the gluttonous Bobo. His abilities are not physical or combative but are rooted in his intelligence and observational skills. He is the one the group turns to for understanding complex situations or devising plans, making him an indispensable asset for a team of adventurers often reliant on courage and instinct over careful calculation.
