Description
Abelt Desler is a central figure in the narrative of Space Battleship Yamato 2202, serving as the former Eternal Supreme Leader of the Great Garmillas Empire. His character is defined by a complex blend of authoritarian rule, strategic genius, and a deep, often hidden, sense of duty toward the survival of his people.

Born into the aristocratic Desler family on the planet Garmillas on March 19, 2166, Desler’s early life was shaped by a looming catastrophe. His uncle, Grand Duke Erich Vam Desler, discovered that their homeworld was approaching the end of its natural life cycle and would collapse within a century. As a young boy, Desler was forced into a blood oath by his older brother, Mathius, swearing to dedicate his life to finding a new home for the Garmillas species. This promise became the core motivation for his every action. Following Mathius's death in battle and his uncle's subsequent passing, an 18-year-old Desler unified Garmillas after a bitter civil war, abolishing the old aristocracy and founding the Great Garmillas Empire in 2188, declaring himself Eternal Leader.

Desler’s personality is that of a calculating and charismatic autocrat, often perceived as cold and ruthless by his enemies. He projects an image of absolute control and pride in his Garmillan heritage, yet this exterior masks a profound pragmatism and a genuine, if paternalistic, concern for his people's future. Unlike a purely selfish tyrant, his expansionist policies, encapsulated in the "Desler Doctrine," were a desperate gambit for species survival, cloaked in the philosophy of spreading the pacifist teachings of the twin planet Iscandar. While he ordered the destruction of worlds that resisted, he was also known to personally save individuals from conquered races, such as the Jirel girls, and integrate them into Garmillan society, offering a path to citizenship. His lifelong, unrequited love for Queen Starsha of Iscandar deeply influenced his political and diplomatic choices, driving his desire to unify their two peoples.

In the story of 2202, Desler’s role shifts from primary antagonist to a complex, anti-heroic ally. After being dethroned by the space battleship Yamato, he is rescued by the Gatlantis Empire and forced to serve Emperor Zworder, commanding a fleet in a failed attempt to destroy his old enemies. However, Desler has no intention of remaining a puppet. He secretly amasses a fleet of loyalist forces, using his position to negotiate for a new habitable planet for his people as a bargaining chip. Throughout the war with Gatlantis, his motivations remain consistent: securing the future of the Garmillan race. This eventually leads him to permanently defect, forming a fragile alliance with the Yamato crew and reconciling with the new democratic government of Garmillas.

Key relationships define his arc. His rivalry with and eventual respect for the crew of the Yamato, particularly Susumu Kodai, transforms from enmity to a grudging mutual acknowledgment. His loyal subordinate, Lieutenant General Ghader Talan, serves as his steadfast fleet commander and confidant. Most critically, his devotion to Queen Starsha is the emotional core of his character. Later, Desler discovers Galman, a planet identical to his dying homeworld and inhabited by the Garmillans' ancestral ancestors. When an unknown force destroys Garmillas and warps Iscandar away, Desler leads a fleet of refugees to rescue Starsha. He learns the devastating truth that Iscandar had preserved civilizations by destroying them and transplanting populations—including his own ancestors—yet he still chooses to protect the Queen, ultimately accepting her sacrifice when she destroys Iscandar to save others.

Desler develops from an imperialist conqueror into a tragic, duty-bound leader willing to set aside his ambition for survival. By the end of the 2202 narrative, he has led his people to their ancestral homeworld, Galman, establishing the new nation of Galman-Garmillas and accepting his role as its head of state, having finally fulfilled the blood oath he made as a child. His notable abilities include supreme strategic and tactical acumen, masterful political manipulation, and commanding presence. He is often seen piloting his flagship, the Neu Deusura, and later the Deusura III, and is known for deploying devastating weaponry like the Desler Torpedo.
