TV-Series
Description
Dent, known as Cilan in English adaptations, is a character from the Pokémon anime who appears as a primary companion to Ash Ketchum during his journey through the Unova region. Dent initially serves as one of the three Gym Leaders of the Striaton Gym, a unique facility where he works alongside his brothers, Chili and Cress. His expertise extends beyond battling, as he holds the rank of A-Class Pokémon Connoisseur, a role that involves evaluating the compatibility and bond between a Trainer and their Pokémon. After being defeated by Ash in a gym battle, Dent decides to leave his post and accompany Ash and his companion Iris on their travels, taking on the responsibilities of the group's guide and cook.

Personality-wise, Dent is characterized by his intense enthusiasm and theatrical flair. He frequently uses cooking and dining terminology in everyday conversation, often punctuating his analyses with the catchphrase "It's tasting time!". This passion extends into a wide array of hobbies and self-proclaimed expertise, leading him to adopt titles such as Fishing Sommelier, Film Sommelier, Science Sommelier, Detective Sommelier, and Metro Sommelier, among others. His energy for explaining these interests can sometimes overwhelm his friends, particularly Iris, who often finds his lengthy explanations tedious. Despite his generally confident demeanor, Dent has a notable aversion to the Pokémon Purrloin, stemming from a negative past encounter which he refuses to discuss in detail. He also harbors a specific enthusiasm for the subway system in Nimbasa City.

Dent's primary motivation is his career as a Pokémon Connoisseur. His decision to travel with Ash is largely driven by a desire to broaden his experiences and deepen his understanding of the Trainer-Pokémon relationship by observing Ash's unique battling style and bond with Pikachu. He acts as a mentor figure to both Ash and Iris, offering advice on raising Pokémon and strategies for improvement. He also possesses a strong sense of scientific curiosity and a propensity for detective work, often using logic and observation to solve mysteries the group encounters.

Throughout the Unova series, Dent plays a significant role as a supporting protagonist. He participates in various competitions, such as the Donamite tournaments, and frequently engages in battles against rivals, including the aspiring connoisseur Burgundy. He also demonstrates his skills as a fisherman, once catching a wild Basculin during a tournament. His journey with Ash and Iris concludes after their adventures in the Decolore Islands, after which he parts ways to pursue his own interests.

Dent's key relationships include his brothers, Chili and Cress, with whom he shares a close bond as joint Gym Leaders. His relationship with Ash is that of a supportive traveling companion and a student of Ash's unorthodox but effective training methods. He shares a friendly but often exasperated rapport with Iris, who frequently teases him for his intense personality. In later series, Dent is shown to have formed a friendship with Brock, another former companion of Ash, whom he meets in the Johto region. He is also acquainted with Clemont and Bonnie from the Kalos region, having met them during a fishing competition. Dent makes a reappearance in the special series Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master, where he reunites with Ash, Misty, and Brock, helping to rescue Brock from a Hatterene in the Galar region before once again going his separate way to explore new interests.

In terms of development, Dent's skills as a Connoisseur are tested and refined throughout his travels. He learns to apply his evaluative abilities in more practical and varied situations beyond formal assessments. His primary Pokémon partner is Pansage, a Grass-type that he uses in Gym battles and contests. Over the course of his journey, he also catches other Pokémon, including a Dwebble that later evolves into Crustle, and a Stunfisk.

Dent's notable abilities include his trained palette and observational skills as a Pokémon Connoisseur, allowing him to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a Trainer's relationship with their Pokémon. He is an accomplished cook, often preparing meals for the group. He also possesses strong analytical and deductive reasoning skills, which he employs when acting as a self-styled detective. In battle, his strategy is characterized as bold and flashy, often utilizing creative combinations of moves with his Pokémon.
