TV-Series
Description
Aonuma, whose real name is Ryo Aoyanagi, is a character who appears as an antagonist during the Yozakura Frontlines Arc. He is a member of the Nijibana, the elite leaders of the criminal organization Tanpopo, and holds the fifth position among them in terms of Hazakura efficiency, recorded at 366 percent.
In terms of appearance, Aonuma is a young man of seventeen years, standing 169 centimeters tall. He has dark blue hair styled into a mohawk with shaved sides and possesses dark blue eyes with distinctive diamond-shaped pupils. His attire consists almost entirely of winter clothing, including a long blue hanten jacket, a red striped scarf, and earmuffs, yet despite this, he is constantly depicted with a visible drop of snot from his runny nose.
Aonuma generally demonstrates a calm, composed, and laid-back personality. This demeanor is so pronounced that he showed no concern when the Yozakura family began their assault on the Tanpopo hideout, instead choosing to sit back and continue eating. His personality and worldview are heavily shaped by a traumatic past. He looks up to his adoptive grandmother, a homeless woman named Hako, and frequently references her advice. After Hako died, Aonuma struggled intensely with accepting kindness from others, feeling perpetually guilty and undeserving of it. To cope with this pain and emotional debt, he chose to freeze off his own emotions, creating an internal coldness that mirrors his external powers.
The character's background reveals he was once a homeless boy who lived in a cardboard box on the street. His neighbor was another homeless person he called Granny Hako, and they would often fight over food, space, and warmth. One winter, Hako left him alone in the cold, and he lost consciousness due to his low body temperature. When he woke up, he found Hako sleeping next to him, having given him her haori and leftover food, but her own body was cold and no longer shivering. Sometime after this event, the Tanpopo leader Kawashita tracked him down using his medical records and took him in.
In the story, Aonuma serves as one of the obstacles for the Yozakura family during the Seed-Sowing Project on Skeleton Island. When Ai, a young associate of Tanpopo, requests that he make snow for her, he obliges by creating snow from his hands. During the Yozakura family's infiltration, he eventually becomes annoyed and decides to help the defense, stating that in a dire situation he would happily abandon everyone to save himself, a principle he claims to have learned from his grandmother. His primary combat role involves directly confronting Kengo Yozakura, using his abilities to cut off access to human experiments and to freeze the power supply system to prevent Shion Yozakura from hacking. The key relationship in Aonuma's narrative is with his deceased grandmother Hako, whose memory both motivates his actions and serves as the source of his emotional vulnerability. His other significant interactions are with his Tanpopo comrades, including Ai, Akai, Kurosawa, and Cha-Cha.
Aonuma undergoes notable development during his confrontation with Kengo Yozakura. Kengo uses his Blooming ability, Assimilation, to understand everything about Aonuma and speaks to him directly about his past with Hako. Though Aonuma initially attacks Kengo, his emotional instability, brought on by these memories, prevents him from fully using his freezing powers. Kengo explains that it is hard to accept kindness, but some people are genuinely kind, and it is not a question of whether one deserves it. He urges Aonuma not to freeze his emotions or feel guilty. This causes Aonuma to break down, stop fighting, and lose the will to continue the battle. After the conclusion of the Yozakura Frontlines mission, Aonuma, like the other Nijibana members, is taken into custody by the organizations involved in the Skeleton Island raid and placed under observation following trials and plea bargains.
Aonuma's notable abilities center on cryogenics. He can freeze objects and create structures out of ice using a cold gas released from his body, which he can freely manipulate. When he activates his Blooming, a power that enhances a spy's inherent abilities, the range of his cold gas is increased dramatically, allowing him to affect much larger areas.
