Description
Battamonda is a character from the anime Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure. He is introduced as a general of the Underg Empire, a villainous organization, and is 36 years old. His name is derived from the Japanese word for locust, an insect known for traveling in destructive swarms.

In his initial villainous appearance, Battamonda has lime green hair tied into a ponytail, yellow eyes with purple eyeshadow, and a dark green gemstone on his forehead. He wears a black crop-top, a dark green leather jacket with a white fluffy collar, a gold necklace, black spiked gauntlets and shoulder spikes, ripped black jeans held by a silver belt, and dark green boots with white trim. When disguised as a human to blend in on Earth, he adopts the alias Monda, with shorter dark green hair, a black t-shirt, beaded wristbands, and beige trousers.

Battamonda's personality is a complex mix of traits. On the surface, he presents himself as laid-back, strategic, and even kind, but this facade masks a violent short temper, immense pride, and a cowardly nature. He is egocentric and looks down on the weak, preferring to let his monsters do the fighting rather than dirtying his own hands. When desperate, he is not above using cruel and underhanded tactics, such as giving his enemies false hope before crushing their spirits or using illusions to manipulate them emotionally. Despite his terrible actions, a core part of his character is a deep-seated desire for acknowledgment and for someone to care about him, a need he struggles to admit even to himself. He suffers from a strong inferiority complex, stemming from his time in the Underg Empire where he was considered weak and useless by his superior, Skihead.

Battamonda's role in the story begins as a primary antagonist. He first appears by targeting a young woman's feelings of hurt and betrayal, turning her glove into a monster called a Ranborg to attack the Pretty Cure. His initial goals are to capture the infant princess Ellee and serve the Underg Empire. He commits significant villainous acts, such as placing the King and Queen of Sky Land into a coma with a curse and, most notably, capturing and infusing Sora's beloved mentor, Captain Shalala, with dark energy to turn her into a powerful Ranborg in a cruel psychological attack. After his repeated failures, he is disowned and cast out by the Underg Empire. Following this, he relocates to Sorashido City on Earth, living under the alias Monda in a rundown apartment and working as a traffic control worker and at a food truck to survive. His focus shifts from serving the empire to seeking petty revenge against the Pretty Cure for ruining his life, though his plans are often comically ineffective.

His key relationships drive much of his development. He harbors a deep grudge against Sora Harewataru, Cure Sky, after she defies and intimidates him, making her a primary target for his revenge. He also clashes with Ageha Hijiri, Cure Butterfly, whom he initially mocks as an outsider before being frightened by her power. However, his most significant relationship is with Mashiro Nijigaoka, Cure Prism. After his exile, Mashiro unknowingly befriends his human disguise, Monda. Even when he tries to sabotage her dreams, her consistent kindness, gratitude, and belief in him create confusion and touch his heart in a way he has never experienced. This unexpected kindness ultimately becomes the key to his redemption.

Throughout the series, Battamonda undergoes a significant transformation. After being cast out, he lives a mundane life on Earth, struggling with his failures and self-loathing. In a final, desperate act to prove his worth to his former commander Skihead, he betrays Mashiro, steals her Mirage Pen, and willingly absorbs a massive amount of Undergu Energy, transforming into a giant, rampaging, and brainwashed monster. Even in this state, a part of him fights back, snatching the pen back from Skihead and returning it to Mashiro. Moved by Mashiro's unwavering determination to save him, his heart shines, allowing the Pretty Cure to purify him. After being saved, Battamonda sincerely apologizes to Mashiro for his actions, thanks the Cures, and becomes an ally, helping them in the final battle against the empire.

As a general of the Underg Empire, Battamonda possesses several notable abilities. He can summon Ranborgs by saying the phrase Come on! Undergu Energy! and can create powerful illusions of other people to deceive his enemies. He is also able to use his Undergu Energy to place a curse on his victims, putting them into a coma. For personal transportation, he can teleport himself from one location to another by using the gemstone on his forehead and saying Battamon-mon!. He also has the power to disguise himself as a human and, later, to create tunnels to transport people between worlds.
