Description
Beshi is a character from the comedy manga and anime series Mōretsu Atarō, created by Fujio Akatsuka. In the story, Beshi is a frog who serves as a companion to the more famous alley cat, Nyarome, and a caterpillar named Kemunpas. This small group of animal friends is a recurring element within the series, often providing commentary on the main action or simply inhabiting the world of the human characters.
Beshi is characterized by a notably calm and observant personality, a contrast to the more boisterous and troublesome Nyarome. The frog is often seen in a laid-back state, living with his companions under a drainpipe. Rather than driving the plot forward with his own schemes, Beshi primarily functions as an observer. One of his main roles is to offer philosophical wisdom and exposition based on the bizarre antics occurring around him, providing a moment of reflection or a wry perspective on the events. This positions him as a figure of quiet commentary within the chaotic world of the series.
His primary relationship is with his two fellow animal housemates, Nyarome and Kemunpas. While Nyarome is frequently driven by his own selfish desires, such as womanizing or causing mischief, Beshi remains a steady presence, often simply hanging out in the background as someone for the cat to talk to. He and Kemunpas, a caterpillar who is also a friend, are frequently seen together, forming a trio with Nyarome. In terms of development, Beshi is a consistent supporting character whose traits and function remain stable throughout the series, providing a reliable presence alongside his more erratic friends. His notable ability is not physical but intellectual and observational, as he is frequently seen dispensing measured commentary or insightful remarks on the story's events, acting almost as a small, philosophical chorus for the audience. Over time, the group of Nyarome, Beshi, and Kemunpas became recognized as the series' mascots, with Beshi himself later being used as an official mascot for a museum exhibition on manga art.
