Description
Mari Tani is a member of the Gaislugger team, a group of five cyborg warriors from the ancient Soron Kingdom who were transformed into living weapons known as cybernoids. She is the only female among the five. Before becoming a cyborg, she was a player of a sport called Soron Tennis, which was a blend of tennis and battledore. Her background includes a personal tragedy: a close friend named Yuki was also scheduled to become a cybernoid, but the transformation surgery failed, resulting in Yuki's death. This loss left Mari as the sole surviving female from her kingdom, a fact that adds a layer of loneliness to her character.

In terms of personality, Mari is portrayed as a capable and determined fighter who carries herself with a sense of duty, yet she retains a recognizably girlish side. She still enjoys things like attending fashion shows, but she consciously suppresses these softer interests because of her altered cyborg body and the overriding mission to defeat the invading Inbem forces. Her motivations are driven by the same overarching goal as her teammates: to protect Earth, the home planet that now hosts the ruins of her lost kingdom, from the alien Inbem. There is a clear sense of melancholy in her character, as she is aware that the kingdom she fought for no longer exists, and her transformation was meant to serve a purpose that cannot be fully realized.

Within the team, Mari serves a specialized role. She is primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing her teammates' cybernoid bodies, and the Soron-go aircraft is equipped with a clinic room where she carries out this work. However, she is not limited to a support function. When the team initiates a Soron Attack, which involves ramming the Soron-go's drill into an enemy vessel and boarding for close-quarters combat, she dons armored battle gear, utters the code phrase Soron, and fights alongside the male members. She is fully capable in combat and does not hesitate to engage the enemy directly.

Her key relationships are with the other four Gaisluggers: Ken, Kaya, Taro, and Riki. They share a bond forged by their shared origin, their lost kingdom, and their present mission. Mari's personal development is subtle but tied to the group's overall arc. The series highlights her confrontation with the past when she encounters the preserved body of her friend Yuki, who had been kept in suspended animation. The Inbem discover this capsule and use it as a trap. Mari is forced to watch as the capsule is destroyed, a painful reminder of her loss and a reinforcement of the tragic burden she carries. Throughout the series, she and her teammates grapple with the harsh reality that they are warriors without a homeland, fighting for a world that may never fully understand them.

Regarding her notable abilities, as a cybernoid, Mari possesses enhanced physical capabilities. She is augmented with built-in weaponry, including sidearms at her waist, and is capable of flight through a small engine in her lower back, though this ability is shown infrequently. She also has a built-in language translation system in her ears, allowing her to understand and speak any language, and a voice synthesizer for generating new languages. In the Soron-go cockpit, her seat is located in the rear right position. When she equips her combat armor, she is protected by the same special alloy as the aircraft and can engage in direct assault missions. Her dual role as both a medic and a front-line fighter makes her a versatile and integral member of the team.
